Hey all, my name is Roland and this is my first posting on the site. Very cool and useful info I have to say.
I recently replaced my stock air filter(w/ a K&M) and spark plugs on my 650 and seem to have an air/fuel mixture problem. It bags at lower RPM and sounds like its gasping at idle. I was told this could be rectified by shimming my carb needles OR replacing my exhaust with something of higher performance (I'm pretty much all stock parts...). I wanted to know if this info is accurate before I go ahead and pull things apart. Thanks Roland |

the only way to know for sure is to tear it down all the way to the frame! Of course it could be your muffler bearings or your blinker fluid. But, I think the best plan of attack is to just wait till everyone gets back from the rideout. Then you can get the proper answer and not my smart-ass comments.

Does it do it with the stock air filter in?
The K&N is probably a high flow unit and you now need to increase your fueling to mathc the higher airflow. Sounds like you've got a curvy, I think the edgy ones can handle the increase in airflow because the ECU can probably compensate automatically to an extent. |

You'll need to change the jets, think dynojet stage III kit.
Comes with instructions. |

A new exhaust will make it worse, not better. Basically the K&N flows a little better, now you have too much air. To compensate you need to flow a little more petrol to balance it again. Don't know what "bags" means bt if it's low RPM it's not a jets problem, and maybe not a needle problem- mixture screws are the place to start i you've got a bad idle.

also there are shops still selling the original K&N filters that they first produced for the sv, instead of the re-designed filters!
They actually give a worse air flow than the OEM filter. Which makes the engine choke when giving it a hand full at low revs, especially in 3rd gear. Best way to see is if the filter has a 'lip' on the top of the intake port. If it does then phone K&N and they should replace it! See svrider.com for more details, as i belive theres an article written on there about the very subject ![]() |
