Default What do i need to tune the carbs?

Well, I have had a Alloy Oval Remus Revolution can on the bike for ages, and the other day the guy from the AA (flat battery!) said it needed the carbs tuning. I have reasonable practical skills but was wondering if i was to fit an aftermarket airfilter i.e. performance K and N, what would I need to do to my curvy SV. I.e. what parts would I need for the optimum tuning, bare in mind that i keep the baffle in it (if that makes a difference) if it does what would i need without the baffle in.

Any further advice on ways of doing it or other information regarding this would be very much appreciated. Apparently their are certain problems like some of the bolts being made of "cheese", whats the best way of getting past this if i do break one,

Any help Please and yes It does need it as the exhaust pops quite a lot!

Cheerrs

Ash

Exhausts can pop because air is leaking into the pipe along a joint rather than because the bike's running lean.

When the bloke said your carbs needed tuning, did he mean they were out of sync (in which case you need a set of vacume gauges) or that the mixture needed richening to suit the Can (In which case you need to open the carbs an fit larger jets).

If you are going to re-jet fit the air filter 1st as this will lean the mixture out further so you're best off correcting for both and only doing the work once.

Aha, I get ya, Well from what i understood he was talking about rejetting. Sometimes I smell fuel around the bike when its running (does this indicate anything) but i know the exhaust needs refitting. If i were to fix that, then what would be the best airfilter to put on the bike for best performance. Then I can get back to the forum if their seems to be any problems (i.e. with the jetting)

Cheers

Best bet is to put it on a dyno first... And unless I'm very much mistaken JHS are in Bristol?

I reckon, if it ain't broke don't fix it with the fuelling... With a slipon and filter you'll not get very much power, a bit better throttle response, but nothing amazing, and it'll cost you... So if it turns out that your can calls for a rejet, then it's worth going with a filter, since it needs the work anyway, but if not then you're taking on a fairly big bill for a fairly small bonus.

Not that I followed my own advice

So, is the fuel smell when running carb balancing or fuel mixture, or any suggestions. What are the symptoms of unbalanced carbs (i have had the bike for two years and never been touched). Also note it doesnt run to well on idle (even though set at correct rpm) used to run fine a couple of years ago and the only changes have been a new exhaust can. Just want to get it running smooth.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

If the bike vibrates lots when on idle or very lumpy idle then the carbs are probably out and need syncing.

The quickest and easiest (although not neccesarily the cheapest!) way of sorting out fuelling isues on a curvy would be to get it on a dyno - it could save a lot of ****ing about if you are not certain in what to do.

As Northy said, JHS are in Bristol - they would be able to sort it for you.

You could have a vaccum leak or a sticky choke cable.

The most obvious signs of throttle bodies being out are vibey running at tick over and it seeming less than smooth, it's all relative though. If you smell fuel that can actually mean the fuelings rich, lean, or you're just standing too close to a cold exhaust, smell doesn't appear to be the best diagnosis.

If you've got a black sooty exit to the exhaust then it tends to mean it's a bit rich (which in the grander scheme of things is better than lean). You've had it for 2 years, how has it been serviced in that time? how many miles on it? when were the plugs changed? When was the air filter cleaned / replaced etc? You may find any rough running is due to it needing a good service?
