Default Winter Project Ideas

Was cleaning my bike in the garage last night and looked at all the space around me and thought - I could easily get another bike in here and have room to take it to bits! So it got me thinking - what would be a good bike to buy for pennies and be worth taking to bits and rebuilding (or not as the case may be! ) which I would actually get some enjoyment out of riding next year.. or the year after, or the year after that... you get the picture!

Budget would be <£250 so it wouldnt matter if it never saw the light of day again..! Found an FZR600 for £150o.n.o - what do you think?

Any other ideas?! Is it worth the bother??!

I've always fancied a Honda400/4 (sorry for the bad language), not sure what they would be going for nowadays though.

All I'd say is be wary of taking on other peeps half-done projects.
You know the stuff that says....justs needs time not money, and it will be a great bike. I went this very route....1 yr 1 month later and counting......it's actually gone backwards!

Exact bike to choose is a personal thing, you don't want to be spending a seriously long time on something you end up hating due to the grief it causes. This grief is inevitable in the re-building bit.

Good tips there haggis - to be honest I was just looking at what was cheapest - not actually what I would want to own! Suppose I should put at least some thought into it! Still, if I get something cheap enough it doesnt matter too much...

Just out of interest, what did you buy?

This little number.....

In the summer it was like this.

But now like this. Looks less complete but actually a good few steps forward. Even though the front end's gone!

Blimey - thats a mental machine! Looks like it has an early GSXR/Bandit motor and god only knows what other parts?! Is that a custom frame? Still - I was thinking about something perhaps a little more "stock"!

I'm thinking of taking my GSXR600 apart this winter - its done 12500 miles and I thought it might be a good idea! My father in law was a mechanic (about 30 years ago) so might end up with a single pot twin stroke carbed 250cc by the end of it.

Which bike for you though Skip? Agree with Haggis that its personal choice, but the original Fireblade could be tempting.

Try to get something that is running, then at least hopefully no nasty suprises. The FZR's where O/K in their day, sounds cheap enough if its complete? You would probably get that for it on E-bay. The trouble with doing bikes up is the price of bits, see the Bike mag article on doing up a Fireblade! Early CBR600's or Bandits are a good bet, plentiful supply of parts although picking one up cheap enough could be a problem. If you go for a really old bike it could be a problem getting hold of bits. David Silvers is very good for Honda bits.
