Default Battery questions

First off, does anyone know if a pointy battery will work in a curvy?

Also, at boxhill on Sunday we noticed a hissing sound coming from the rear. Thought it was going to be a recovery truck home thanks to a puncture, but turned out to the battery .

Any likely causes? Reg/rec playing up and chucking too much voltage to the battery?
I'm not sure if this is the right battery for the SV - I've got two different batteries from SVs.
This battery was in my race bike, but was a bit low on charge, so I stuck it on the charger and put the battery from my road bike into my race bike as a friend was borrowing it.
Charger is a car charger, but wasn't any discharge after charging on that.
Another friend took the road SV out for a ride with this battery after I had charged it and didn't notice it hissing after, however may have just not noticed and I probably ride in a bit more 'spirited' fashion.

I wouldnt charge a SV battery with a car battery charger it will kill it get something like an Optimate.
You will need to check the voltage sounds like you have damaged the plates inside the battery which are now shorting hence the hissing sound really hope I am wrong as batterys arent cheap.

Seems I've killed the battery, the battery was being dodgy before - so it may have been that.

Know I shouldn't, but used that charger on bike batterys loads of times before with no problems.

Any one any ideas on a pointy battery in a curvey?
Place on ebay has pointy batteries for £13 or so or curvey 'gell' batteries for £25 - I need two and am poor (maybe because I keep using inappropriate kit ).

I know common sense suggests they aren't compatible as different ones are specified, but I've often bodged batteries of designed for models not specified in without problems.

I used an old fireblade battery in my Sv for the winter, smaller and worked ok. If I had the cash I'd get the proper job from halfwits and be done with it.

My car charger has 6 and 12 amp setting, I set it on 6 for the bike battery.
Output was 13,4 volts and no problems with any of my bikes with this charger.
I never use alarms tho.

The problem with car battery chargers is they can allow the battery too draw much current which will kill a modern gel type battery you could try a resistor in line to limit it.

I don't use a gel battery just a sealed lead acid unit like what came with the bike.
I've used the same charger on all my bikes with no hassles.
I think most of this specific bike charger stuff is from optimates PR department...

No its not I know of several bikers who have killed bike batterys with a car charger so its not bull **** it does depend a lot on the battery charger the bigger the current the worse it is.

Got any science facts to back this up. I'm afraid the "I know lots of bikers who have" doesn't really convince me. I mean I know lots of bikers, most of them talk utter shyte nearly all the time, but even then I was told that by lots of bikers. Who I also know

Possibly, look here:

And on alternator checking, although this won't be the problem if it really is a overcharging:
Click Me Too!

A car battery charger will be OK, as long as you don't make a habit of it. Generally speaking a battery should be charged at about of 10% of it's rated capacity, but a 'quick charge' for a brief period is OK, as long as the battery is in usable condition, just flat.

If an SV650 has a flat tyre in the forest and no-one is there to blow it up, how long will it be 'til someone posts that the reg/rec is duff and the world will end unless a CBR unit is fitted? A little bit of knowledge = a dangerous thing.

Yes.
Cool, cheers.

I'm thinking it was just the reg rec as the battery I've stuck back in there is working perfectly (so far), will keep the reg/rec tests in mind.
Worked late last night, so got a chance to print off the workshop manuals as well .
