Default introductions & navigations

Afternoon all,

I've been watching the forum for a while now for advice and guidance, but as I've just secured my first SV650s (whoop whoop!!) I think I'm finally entitled to introduce myself at long last – hello folks!!

I'm off down to the Isle of Wight on Friday to pick her up after searching high and low for the right bike at the right price. I've managed to get my hands on a yellow curvy (2000) with full fairing and akrapovic exhaust. I'm so chuffed - it could be a dog but I wouldn't care right now!!

Anyone advise on a good insurance provider for a first timer (28 with zero NCB) to go with, I've gotta sort it out before close of play on Friday?

Also, any advice for the ride back from Southampton to South London? Anyone had a look at the new TomTom navigator for bikes? Seems like a good idea, especially if picks up any Dutch chanels for tea breaks!

I'm interested in getting involved with a track day as I recon I gotta-alota-learnin to do over the next few years, any suggestions?

Take it easy,
Noisie

1st off welcome.

Lets hope that bike is everthing that you want it to be.

Insurance wise, ring round, its the only way. What can be good for one, might not be for another. I started with bennetts, but change every year. Im sure that there are one of those confused.com type services out there.

As for a ride back, plenty of routes to choose. I would locate the A272 and follow that all the way to the end A267 then up via Tunbridge wells, tonbridge, sevenoaks etc.

As for nagagators, use a map and your nose!

Plenty of trackdays out there, but i would get used to the bike 1st, then look at doing one, in around 6 months or so.

I started with Bennets, but am now with ebike who seem really cheap!

Don't use confused.com, the advert ****es me off more than anything.

Thanks.

I'm healthy scared of bikes, and have waited 12 years to get one until I trusted myself enough.

Route wise I'm looking for something easy and open rather than anything challenging or twisty (time enough for that!).

I'm intending on doing some small weekend rides initially to get used to her for a while before trying anything more challenging. I've been told that a good track day with some guidance can help improve your bike control massively, but being comforable on her first is a must!

I've also been thinking of doing the 'Bike Safe' course with the police. Not only drops your insurance premiums but should improve my riding too. Anyone tried it before?

Defo the best source of info on the web!!

Cheers for all the help.

Bikesafe is really just a taster/assessment of your riding. Consider doing the IAM test. The London Advanced Motorcyclists group is probably your local 'branch' to do it with. Twice-monthly 'pot luck' sessions go out from Banstead and Beckenham.

Congrats on the bike, Matt. Should be a lot of fun - especially with the summer coming (although, no sign of that quite yet!)

Bikesafe is a good day. A great reminder about how easily it can all go wrong with some pointers about how to avoid it. IAM is underrated by many bikers. I still ride with the the Middx Advanced M/cyclists and it's a great way to ride with people who's riding you can trust on roads that you might otherwise not have known about.
I waited a 18 months before doing the IAM which I thought was worthwhile just to consolidate the basics of handling a bike. It's not a huge discount off insurance, though.

I think that 'healthy scared' is essentially Respect and it's definitely a good thing! I get reminded of that every now and then - especially on the South to Central London commute...

Enjoy!

Cheers

J

its a long way to go for a bike innit? I hope its dirt cheap.

Anyhoo, hello and welcome firstly.

Dont forget that motorways are boring as hell on a bike, so maybe worth finding yourself a nice A road instead, whatever you fancy tho.

Bikesafe is supposed to be good and worth doing from all accounts.

Insurance, as Viney said, ring round but do also try http://www.ebikeinsurance.co.uk/

Good luck and check out the Soho massive section and get yourself down there on a Friday soon.
