Default uprated cams

are uprated cams worth getting, will they make the bike go faster and will it make the bike unreliable.

IIRC the Pointy K3 cams can be dropped into a curvy (2002 and earlier) to up the power a bit, or more specifically the K3 exhaust cams can be put into a curvy (K2 and earlier) and the standard curvy exhaust cams moved to the inlet side. The standard curvy inlet cams then go on ebay I presume.....

Otherwise there are other companies that will re-grind cams to make them more aggressive. Sure Northwind will be along shortly to put me right as I'm a few pints along this evening

Bottom line is decide what you want, tuning an SV for more power to go faster is a waste of cash according to many of the more experienced forum members....

I thought it was k3+ inlet cams inlet side on k2- and k2- inlet to exhaust.

As has been started, the later cams are said to give a better output, but one has to question why do you need more oomph and how much are you after?

If you want lots more it’d probably be more cost effective to move up to a SV1000 (or whatever). Unless you can do the work yourself, it is gonna cost you a few hundred to get the cams swapped, its questionable if it is worth the investment unless you have a specific need?

At the end of the day it is your wedge and your choice

Yes, yes and... no short answer Any power mod increases the strain on the engine, but cams are fairly good for that. Chances of it causing any sort of failure are, I reckon, very slim. There's an increased risk from going through the rev limiter (ie downshifting with the revs high...) but that's not too clever anyway.

As power mods for the SV go, it's cheap to do, moderately easy, and has no setup time. To get the best results they'd need degreed but that's a lot of extra money for not much result- £135 buys you a set of K3> intake cams and 2 cam chain tensioner gaskets. Far, far better value for money than a race system and rejet.

You can get proper race cams on adjustable sprockets, but unless you're desperate to get every last hp that's hard to justify IMO, you pay a lot more for not an awful lot of benefit.

You can go cheaper, though... SV engines tend to lose the big end, so there's loads of SV engines with intact tops and destroyed bottoms that can be had for peanuts. Find a K3> engine and you're golden, plus you can get worthwhile scrap from the rest. Or I've got a set of carbed intakes that you could have for not very much, that'd give you probably 2/3 of the boost from the full-fat cam swap for less than half the price, if you want.
