Default Rear shock wear

Just got my LC MOT'd and had a little ride. I'd forgotten how soft the rear shock is. Even on max pre-load there is far too much sag.

Do the springs in rear shocks lose strength over time?

I guess I'll be looking for a replacement shock.

Great fun though!

All shocks deteriorate over time. The SV's good life is about 20k with some heavy lump like me on it!! Its a combination of the oil breaking down and the spring loosing its springiness. Im sure that Lord squid of Bouncy things will be along with a highly complex answer soon...stay tooned!

It's not a loss of damping as such, more a loss of spring strength. Just makes the ride a little interesting and wobbly. Still that can be fun.

I need to decide what to replace it with. Original equipment or a Hagon or EMC type thing. No point going crazy with spending money on it as it will never handle brilliantly, but it does need to have functioning damping and not to bottom out with a pillion!

May be worth asking if Hagon / Maxton or similar could re-spring the old shock, though if they're not going to be able to change the oil in it and check the seals there's little point...
