Default cyclists and headphones your opinion pleez

A work colleague cycles in to work every day from Archway to Islington with headphones the size of dinner plates blaring out for the entire journey. How do I know this? He still has them on when he arrives at the office. To prove a point I shouted "Morning Jack" as he walked passed me to put his bike away. He didn't bat an eyelid. Couldn't hear sh**. Later, myself and a few others asked him on whether he can hear cars, lorrys and motorbikes etc on his commute? His answer ....... "Why would I want to hear a lorry"

OMG

Anyone come across this type of brick wall before? Ignorant or what!

More the distraction than the not being able to hear. Wear earplugs and they help you focus better.

Listen to music or talk on the phone while riding/driving = more likely to end up in hospital

His choice though...

I weat earphones during my 17 mile commute to work every morning, but they are not the kind that go inside your ear. I'm pretty sure I can't even get the volume loud enough to drown the exhaust noise, not that I have tried. I can still hear wind noise, exhaust, and cars coming up behind me and such...sure takes the "boring" out of those 17 miles of 4 lane highway.

As far as this guy goes... , Just not safe IMO.

I think you need to be more alert on a pushbike too. When i wear headphones it makes little difference as the windnoise stops me hearing much. It ****s me up that pushbikes don't have mirrors!

He'll be the kinda person who cuts accross the road without raising an arm to let others know he's moving accross the road.

Many an argument over cyclists over that. They just don't seem to get it.

200kg bike + rider + 30mph Vs 5kg bike + rider + 10mph......

Who's going to come off far worse in an accident?

ok i will!! LOL

on a serious note i cycle to work sometimes and wear headphones with my music quite loud, that said they are sports ones that hook over the ear, and i can still hear big loud lories comming.

this argument imo is slightly muted by the fact that listening to music does not distract the rider any more than it would do a car driver with the radio on!!! do you all drive around in silence?? No though not.

having/not having headphones on wont stop a lorry, car, Mbike hitting you wil it??

I have never not stopped to look before turns etc or carry out any other kind of movement wrongly just because i have my music on.

Maybe we should bad car stereos etc cos it might stop us concentrating on the road!! FFS!

Why shouldn't he able to listen to music if he wants to? If he's cutting across cars etc. he'll learn his lesson one day & until then, just think of him as an exercise in hazard perception/target practice depending on your mood.
