Back on topic, quick, before Ape man shuts us down!!

No, she will not be attending out secret little, south-west, half-day ride. We're concentrating on getting her competent on the sv and dealing with other traffic before we unleash her on a ride-out. We also don't get much time to get her practising so it'll take a little longer.

I recon she'll need tax, mot and insurance by April! (That's Ebony needing tax and mot and Kate needing insurance!!)

PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

She just didn't truly believe she could do it today, something in her head kept saying she couldn't do it so she couldn't even manage to get a u-turn done.

It wasn't bad but I didn't feel she was in the right frame of mind to go at any real speed, therefore what I had planned, didn't happen.

It's ok though, it'll be done the next time we get a chance to play on Ebony.

Didn't know this until she started ride. Believe me, I don't take any risks, hence I didn't allow her to go faster or ride around the main road on the industrial estate like she wanted to!

Its all about that.

Do or do not there is no try... or

Dont think you can, know you can.

Keep going when it gets hard and dont give up, if you tell yourself you cant do it before you even start, you will fail. Thinking postively, and remember what your instructor told you when you were having to lessons and listen to Phil and you'll get through it.

You're not rubbish.

U-turns are not the be all and end all of motorcycling. To be perfectly honest I hate doing them and I've been riding 30 odd years. Getting a U-turn nailed is something you do for the benefit of a DSA examiner, and from the moment he hands over a pass certificate just ignore the fact they have ever existed.

I'd still rather get off my bike and push it to where I need it to be than do a U-turn that may land me and the bike on tarmac - they really aren't a viable manouver in normal day to day use unless the road is easily wide enough to comfortable acheive them.

Kate, I'm sure you're doing fine, just keep the PMA and everything will work out right. Practice does make perfect.

She has passed

Hovis means, a little time of bad weather to pass, before good weather comes, so she can go out for proper rides!

Strong is the fear of failing. Mind what you have learned. Save you it can.

Not too much fear of falling as she knows the bike can be fixed and at slow sped she'll only end up with a couple bruises at most!

Not saying u-turns are the be-all and end-all, but if she can control a bike when it's going slow (slow control and u-turns) then she'll be better equipped to control a bike whilst it's moving properly.

The more comfortable she is on the bike, the less she'll have to concentrate on when she's out riding properly.

I want her to be 100% comfortable on the bike and 100% comfortable out on the road on her 125 before she is let loose on the open roads on the sv. This will enable her to concentrate on the unpredictability of the other road users!

Oh, and don't think she has any probs riding cuz she doesn't, what's difficult is convincing her that she is a more than competant rider!

Regards

I know where you're coming from but...

Why not let her take the SV out on some quiet roads where there wont be much traffic and let her get on with it, maybe do some slow speed stuff as well and mix it up a little bit. I found the bigger bikes much easier to ride once than the 125 was I did my CBT on.

I know what you mean about the slow speed stuff though, but might do her confidence some good to get out on a quiet B road as well. Some things like going to fast etc etc you have to learn for yourself :D;)

Dont mean to talk out of turn, just thought I'd offer my thoughts.

phil24_7
25-01-09, 07:06 PM
No that's cool fizz, confidence is the main issue, slow control is to show her that she can control the "big bike", once she "knows" she can do it we can work on some faster stuff. I know she's more than competent enough to ride the SV, but she needs to realise that too!

I must admit, I found the slow techinical stuff hard to concentrate on for too long and if it didn't go great it spoiled the day. Mixing it up with the simpler but more rewarding pleasures (straight lines ;-) ) made it more fun and gave you lots of positives form the day. I agree though Phil and Kate, the slow control is key to begin with.

Am I missing something here? Kate, you have passed your test? If so, go out on your own. No pressure of having anyone analysing your riding. You only have to prove your own riding to yourself. Get some confidence without any pressure. Then go out and get some advice if you feel you need it.

Or am I just being stupid?

I passed on a 125, I am happy to go out riding on my 125 alone no problem. I am getting used to the weight of the 650 and gaining some confidence.
I fell of a 500 twice during my lessons (hense doing it on the 125 in the end) and i think that is still lodged in my head when I ride the sv. Sometimes I forget it and just ride and other times my brain says "you can't do this...remember!"

It was only my second time on the sv so no harm done, plenty of time to get it right!

I see. If it is the only the weight thing which is the problem. Why do you not go up in steps? A 250 has considerable more weight that a 125 but is still nice and light. I believe there is another female rider who passed on a 125 and then found the SV to heavy for her so rides a 250 at the moment. Something to consider maybe?

I passed on my virago 125, then straight onto my VN900 which was 249kgs - mistake!

I find the sv great in comparison, really light, only at low speeds is weight in issue, ormoving it about. The best thing for me personally was going out and doing miles, but like anyone you will have off days, especially if you are feeling under the weather.

Just remember even bikers that have been riding for years have crap days, they are no different. Sounds like you are doing great anyway- do you have any female friends with bikes? Quite helpful maybe to see how they managed with the extra weight.

My thoughts... it's all experiance, you went out not feeling 100% and a lesson was learnt, it all adds up, stick to it, knowing when not to ride is as (if not more) important than the other way round.

Miles under the wheels and time in the saddle are both your friends, keep it up.

Cheers Mark.
