Santa brought me a Lagavulin 16yo and Glenlivet 18yo, so I did quite well too! :D

I was round at a mate's place on Boxing day for the grand opening of a bottle of Ardbeg Supernova that he & a couple of mates bought between them. It's lovely - I could only have a sip though cos I was driving :(

Hmmmm must try that! (Both the Ardbeg and the bottle share idea!)

Found a cheeky wee wine shop in bridge of allan the other day, had a small but selective range of malts, picked up a cheeky 18yo rosebank which i hadn't seen before.
They also had 6 casks that they've bottled themselves, all of which were a bit different, definately a hidden gem

Lilly they also had the entire range of Bruichladdich 16s ie the ones that are all finished in different casks, port sherry madiera etc

Not keen on the stuff myself, my ex works for Diageo and taught me everything I know about the stuff, Talisker goes down quite easy, and I'm a member of the Laphroig family :p they'll send a miniature to your door for £4 free p&p

:rolleyes:I prefer Grouse tbh pal. It's yours if you want it x

Well collected the Scapa from the lovely Dawn yesterday. Although unfortunately she was working I was made most welcome and given a lovely cup of tea by Hovis21, who i must say was cutting a dash in Dawns fluffy slippers. :D Wasn't supposed to mention that.
was entertained by their charming daughter and got to play with their new puppy. All in all a very sucessful trip. Thanks again to you both.

Unfortunately I then had to spend some time with jillyburd and her smelly dog (i didn't think so), at least the kids were there to keep me amused;) Tiger you'll be pleased and amazed to know she had been doing housework although, S did slip me a note complaining about being used as child labour and being forced to clean her own room. She also had to ask for her dinner at least five times, twas like a scene from oliver.I think you may need to remind your wife this is the 21st century and it is no longer acceptable practice. Hope (sure) your driving test went well and your taxi licence was renewed.:smt028

See you all again soon.

No, if you come to visit me while Mrs Tiger is away and I've been doing housework, that's amazing.

As for #1 daughter, we make her ask for food 5 times to make sure she's actually hungry, not just bored. Besides, it was probably about 10 minutes since her last 'snack'.

Anyway, you did decant some of the Scapa before you left, didn't you?

I'm sitting drinking a 12yo "Highland Single Malt... Selected by Tesco" which was £16 quid.

I bought it because my whisky habit costs a fortune (must stop while my liver is young enough!) and I used to drink Black Bottle as an everyday tipple to keep the cost down, can't get it in England so easily, so I thought I'd try this.

You know what, it ain't at all bad! Not the smoothest, but not paint stripper and certainly not any worse than some well known 10/12yo malts, of course it will be produced by the same distillery as one of those malts! Then sold by the cask to Tesco's who dilute and bottle it. It's better than some of the younger novelty crap they do for tourists, such as Balblair Elements or some of the no age statement stuff that the likes of Bowmore produce.

They also do a Speyside Single Malt and an Islay Single Malt, I'll try those next and let you know how I get on.

Went to Bakewell today, and found a little goldmine of a place, hidden in a small courtyard

Happy Birthday for tomorrow you old fart! ;) Cheers, you should know by now if i stick to malts i dont get a hangover, its only when i partake or that grape distilate or pint glass fillers i can be a bit foggy. Got in the back of 2 and was up with the pups at 8. Walked then back to bros to collect car, 6mls apx, big walk for their wee legs.

Well a lot of people who dont like whisky, or only think it is ok LOVED the Strath Isla.

So, get a bottle of it (its only £100/bottle) and if it doesn't work out, you can send me the rest of the bottle.

If it does work out, you can get me a bottle as a thank you :)

Best bet in honesty is to arrange to go ona tasting at a fellow orgers place that DOES like whisky and try a few - the taste can vary wildly, so you WILL have to try a few to get one you like.

I love the stuff but it doesn't love me. It is an acquired taste but over the years you learn the differences just as you would with wines. Propriety brands such as Grouse,Bells are nothing like an aged single malt and few pubs have the real McCoy.
You may find some that do 12 year old malts but they are session whisky and more refined
than the propriety optic brands but will give you a taster between blended and single malt
Try a distillery tour and sample some of the good stuff would be my suggestion

P.S It can become an expensive acquired taste:)

There are a few bottles around, very few of the original ones, some gordon and macphails and other barrel buyers about. stumbled across a 21 a few weeks ago. unfortunately the 12s are now going for 50 - 60 whereas 5 or 6 years ago they were 25 - 30.:nomore:

The Speyside and Islay were perfectly drinkable too. And since I've started on the budget whisky being the tight ar$e that I am, I may as well continue!

Sainsburys have a Laphroaig Quarter Cask on offer at £22 at the moment. It's under 6 yr old, 5 years then 7 months in the quarter cask. Apparently being 1/4 of the volume in each cask means it doesn't need so long to mature, but maybe that's a gimmick. A bit harsh on it's own, but at 48% abv, you'd expect to add a few drops water to this one, and of course that means you get more whisky out of your 70cl bottle ;) With just the right amount it rounds off very nicely and is very similar to a Laphroaig 10 yr old.

Sainsbury's also do the equivalent to the Tesco's own label malts, and I'm about to crack open their 'Taste the Difference' Highland one now and will report back. I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly the same as the Tesco's one, bought by the barrel from the same distillery, but it's also on offer at the moment for a bit over 14 quid, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Not good TBH, I'd buy the Tesco's one again, but not this one. It leaves an unpleasant metallic aftertaste. At only 14 quid it's not great loss, I'll just keep it as a mixer.

Water? Water?!!

Ralph.........Water?!

You are right in that on occasion you should add a bit of water but ideally it should be water from the source used in the whisky. Next best thing would a be bottled spring water but please don't say you've been using tap water - all that chlorine & flouride...yuck!

Last Saturday of the month. Tonight is 'Shooter's night.' At 5:00pm we start on the top shelf and spoil ourselves - by 8:00pm the snooker will be a little different.

Up where you live your tap water shouldn't be that bad? It's actually not too bad in Solihull, if your happy with the taste of your water from the tap, then it's OK to use a few drops in your Whisky. I know what you mean though, my Sister used to live in London where the tap water had been through somebody elses body ten times, and you came out of the shower smelling like you'd been in the swimming pool and it tasted disgusting! If your visiting a pub or hotel, ask for bottled water (Scottish if possible, not bloody Evian!) if your at home and you know your water, you might be happy to use it.

It's only whisky that carry the distilleries own label that use the source water from the distillery anyway, and even the same source may not be the same water in every case as originally used in the whisky, as local changes that happen upstream in the decade or more that the whisky is in the cask, such as buildings, drainage, etc, can change the water supply.

Whiskies that are bottled by third parties such as Gordon and Macphails, will have been bought by the cask at cask strength and diluted elsewhere, by a different master blender. The same goes for any Pure Malts, or blended whiskies.

Lots of cheap label spirits are actually diluted at the bottling hall.

The best "budget" malt about imho is Glen Grant. You tend to find it at co-op for £12-£15 for a litre. Failing that Asda are doing Jura for £17 now.

do you get co-op in england or is it a scottish chain??

Yes, but here they are always called co-op, nohing like the Scotmid brand name exists. O think Co-op bought Somerfield recently so they are all changing to co-op too, and if the haven't changed shop branding already they probably will have the same whisky deals and co-op branded products on the shelves.

Just thought i'd share with you all that last weekend I was Best Man at my mates wedding at Comlongon Castle in Dumfries. Lovely lovely place indeed. Pics are on me FaceBook for those of you who have FB!

We were staying a little up the road in the Dryfesdale in Lockerbie. My mate decided to marry an English burd so afte the speeches and the nice dinner I decided to introduce the brides father to some single Malt Whiskeys from our land :-)

We sampled some Balvenie DoubleWood 12yo, a Glenkinchie 12yo and Talisker 10yo. All drunk neat i might add. My favourite out the 3 was the Balvenie a nice smooth taste and it got better as it warmed up.

Its been a while sine a had a wee tipple but i must say a bottle of Balvenie will be on my xmas list lol

Big whisky drinker here although no particular favorites. Only 2 whiskys I did not like: Talisker 18yr, just tasted weird and Suntory Yamazaki 10yr, that is just not whisky. Japs should stick to making bikes.

I have another bottle of the Talisker 18yr if anyone wants to do a swap.

I've been trying to build up a collection of malts. It peaked at 13 bottles a few years back. It's currently 5... :-)

I'm partial to a blend too; Johnny Walker Swing is nice, and I love Chivas Regal.

Glenkinchie distillery (Pentcaitland, east lothian) tasting session today. 12yo nice better with a drop or three of h2o,
sherry finish (distillers choice i think)mmm not convinced,
cask strength not impressed nicer warmth than the 12 but more chemical, stick with the 12 (half the price of the cask),
Dalwhinnie double matured not as nice as the standard 15yo,
Clyneish 14yo very nice if somewhat nondescript,
lagavulin double matured was stunning, best of the bunch, I'm not normally a Lagavulin fan but woah, full flavour mild peatiness, fruity aftertones and subtle warmth, lovely (but expensive) apx £60 a bottle
All of this is obviously only in my humble uneducated opinion.

I've just poured the last of a Glenfiddich Rich Oak 14yo (New American and New Spanish cask) which was very nice, but now I have no more malt in the house, so what am I going to do when this glass is finished?

Funnily enough I was in an establishment[KG will know what I mean] on Friday night in Bristol and double Glenkinchie was £2:40 a glass,as was Highland Park,Jura and several others.

As there was 11 of us we left the said bar somewhat depleted of malt whisky, full of warm glow against the snowy conditions, and talking soup.:D

Lagavulin, double matured... yep, hate you loads... not jealous. Wish I'd stayed up there on Friday and helped you with a more mature opinion, i.e. from an old barsteward.

Dalwhinnie is just too nice...

This afternoon I've been sat sniffing and coughing, and now have a very large glass of my favourite. A Glenturret. Very pale, and who sooooo nice.

15 year olds get you in trouble,I prefer 16 year old or something more matured than that even but they start to become expensive;)

Very much enjoying a bottle of 18 year old Glenfiddich that an American mate of mine posted across the Atlantic because, well, it'd be wasted on him.

Good enough for me. :-)

Found this place at the weekend

What a great shop and very generous with their tasting bottles too! What a shame I was driving :(

I bought a lovely 15yo Coal Ila at cask strength that they bottle themselves. Nectar. As they only have a little they sold it in half-bottles only for a very reasonable £23. After trying two others, a 15yo Springbank and a super-peated malt from Bunnahabhain in a black bottle (I forget the name) I bought a Longrow CV on their recommendation. Have to say the Longrow is absolutely LUSH.

And what happens when you've finished the one that's wrapped up? Get it in stock whilst it's cheap ;)

Recieved a bottle of 'Diggles Dram' in the work's Xmas raffle yesterday, which upon closer inspection appears to be a rebadged 16 year old, cask strength (57.7%) Bruichladdich.

Result? Oh, I think so!

Yeeeeeeha! at gleneagles, just got myself a 1986 Bunnahabhain and got a wee cheeky Bruichladdich 16 year old, bordeaux finish. Very dark by comparison to normal light gold. The Bunnahabhain is quite fruity but very nice. Got a taster cos scared o open the bottle :)

Me and the Mrs are both Glenmorangie lovers original or Quinta Ruban, but the Dalwhinnie or Dalmore distilleries put out a good malt.
Although the bottle of 19yr,55% Bladnoch we have at the moment gets my attention before all the abouve mentioned

Mmm.....am working on a bottle I've just opened.....but that's good to know...will double check and maybe invest in the 'chaser' after pay day!!

Just received a wee bonus.....rumaging in the back of the cupboard ,I discovered an unopened 1/2 litre of Glenfiddich 12 yo......which is OK....up there with finding a tenner down the back of the couch!!!

I'm looking to buy a decent bottle of something that isn't the usual mainstream whisky. For preference, one of the Islay whisky's - I like the heavy peaty flavour.

Highly unlikely to be able to get a bottle locally but I'm in Glasgow 5th/6th Feb.

Any suggestions? Keep 'em clean

Bruichladdich is very, very nice Bri - that cask strength bottle I got at Xmas time is lovely, and the standard stuff is good too...

Nice little Islay single malt, worth a taster anyway

Mmmmm, heaven.

Also spotted Glenturret, sherry cask. I finished my last one a few years back and haven't replaced it. Gonna have some fun with this lot.
