So the draws out:

Not bad for England at all.
Group G's a monster, and assuming Brazil and Spain are top, sadly one of Portugal or Spain will be out before the quarters!

Yeeh it'll be a great game. Last time they played I think it was 6-2 to Brazil, tho that was a friendly. Much different in a World Cup.
I reckon Brazil will top that group should they play somewhere near their best...if Ivory Coast and Portugal are on their A games, it will be interesting. Poor Korea, lol!

New Zealand FTW! :D
I can see Brazil and Ivory Coast going through from the GOD (Group Of Death). Portugal are lucky to be there given their record in qualifying.
Sorry Filly Pie :-)
Keep your eyes on The Netherlands, and remember who tipped 'em to do well
Brazil, whilst hard to beat, are not the attractive prospect they used to be. Two holding midfielders? Liverpool spring to mind
Assuming that England go into it with a full squad and the WAGs are kept well away, my prediction is:
England v Spain Final, Spain to win.

Hmm, well I favour Brazil for two reasons. Firstly,
94 they won, 98 they lost, 2002 they won, 2006 they lost...2010...(win?)
ok obviously that's no predictor, but secondly, this Brazil team is almost completely new. The aging team that was in 2002, full of the Carlos's and Cafu's are no more. Dunga's a good manager, Brazil are much tighter at the back, Julio Cesar is I believe the best keeper to ever come out of Brazil, and perhaps the best in the World at the moment, and Brazil have some cracking young players...they swept Spain aside in the confederations cup as well.
I've worked out that the quarters in Englands side of things would be Brazil v Holland, and England v France (should all the big names top their group) . I reckon the hardest path to Brazils final will probably be Holland...they always seem to cause them problems, and it always proves a cracker (remember 98?) I reckon England will take France but then fall short to Brazil.
Brazil V Spain final IMO, and Brazil will take it. When Brazil are on their top form, the ball sticks to their feet like glue, and the other team merely spectates!
New Zealand FTW! :D
The All Whites have a good chance of making it to the second round with that group.
The All Whites have a good chance of making to the second round with that group.
As long as they can resist the temptation to pick the ball up and spin-pass it out wide
So thought I'd bump this back into business now that the time is so near to first kick off.
3 games a day, plan aint to miss any until you have to 10 days in when they play simulataneously. Hope South Africa turn out to be good hosts - sadly for them doubt they'll get past their group.
Looking forward to it. Shame im in the States for the first two weeks and will miss most of the group games. Never mind, im sure they have TV's over there...
Aw in the states during the world cup. I think the USA is the one team in the world cup that is only representing the squad.

Yeh it is a tough group. I think the new team is Brazil's key. They won copa america and confederations. Their unenthusiastic team of old cost them it. Their defense and keeping is the best its been for some time.
Also if Portugal's pre world cup form continues, they'll be going home ahead of Ivory Coast.

Whats your prediction for England then?
Just watched the opening ceremony, thought it was quite good as opening ceremonies go.
If England don't get through the group stages it will be a bigger failure than McClown not qualifying for the Euros.
England have as good a chance as any other team and would love us to win but I think a semi exit is the more likely outcome.
SA vs Mexico on soon, would love SA to win the opening game but from what I saw against England Mexico are the favourites for this game.
Prediction
SA 1 Mexico 2
I truly believe England are going to win it. I dont know why but I think this is it. We've got a decent squad, nothing extraordinary, but they've all got experience and age on their side so that is clearly a big plus.
England 2 USA 0
England 3 Algeria 0
England 3 Slovenia 0
England 2 Australia 0
England 1 Germany 0
England 2 Holland 1
England 2 Spain 1
Thanks

John Terry 67/1 to win player of the tournament.
I've got money on Mexico but sod it, hope SA win now, they deserve it.
Now this is why I like working for Unilever......
"We recognise that many people in the building will want to see the world cup matches over the forthcoming weeks, with this in mind the site Leadership team will encourage line managers to use their discretion and flexibility to allow employees see the matches. To assist, wherever possible and when business commitments allow, the opportunity to broadcast live World Cup matches throughout the office will be arranged. If in the latter stages of the competition there is heightened interest and any of the key matches take place during working hours the opportunity to relay games onto the big screen in the Auditorium will also be taken"

We're allowed to watch it at work, no problem... as long as you dont get caught, if so you're screwed.
Well the France Uruguay game was a bit of a snoozefest, let's hope the French don't get past the first round if they are going to play like that.
nice one fizz.
I reckon England should get far, probably semis. The team is not as good as last time - some players not on top form and not the best pre-tourny games. That said, provided England top the group, should hopefully be an easy route to the semis. If its bothced and second place however, it'll most prob be ze germans in the second round, and ya never wanna play them in the knockout stages.
Come top and the toughest team up until the semis will be France, and they are complete sh*ite. Cheated Ireland and were awful today against Uruguay.
England 2 USA 0
England 3 Algeria 0
England 3 Slovenia 0
England 2 Australia 0
England 1 Germany 0
England 2 Holland 1
England 2 Spain 1
England can't face Germany in the quarters. It'll be most probably France if France top their group and go on to beat the runners up of Argentinas group in second round.
Was really rooting for S.Africa today. Immense goal to open the tournament, shame they couldn't hold on!
Just gone through my wallchart and come up with the following predictions.
England win the group, beat Australia in the second round, Mexico in the quarter finals, then get knocked out by Brazil in the semis who then lose to Argentina in the Final.
England finish third beating Portugal in the playoff.
Having watched the first 4 games I can only really say that South Korea looked a decent side that England might get a game out of - I didn't think too much of Argentina this afternoon.
Probably jinxed England now and the next few teams will all play blinders!

Wanted, 1 pair of sticky goal keeper gloves, please send to england team, south africa. Sorry, what a howler but to be fair england should have had that sewn up well before then, and in the second half.
yes, the tossers.
ITV are waste. It's not the first time either.
Interesting group now. I can't see Slovenia or Algeria doing a thing against England or USA so now it's all about attacking football and bagging as many goals as possible to avoid Germany. Promising stuff today and a completely different team to pre-cup friendlies. Just need to be a bit more efficient in front of goal.
Carragher will struggle in the world cup if he keeps playing til the latter stages (this coming from a Liverpool fan as well). He simply does not have the pace to keep up with the world class strikers. I told my dad when we were watching, 'look he'll get booked in no time'. And he did, perhaps even lucky not to get another afterwards.
Good performance on the whole, but definite improvements needed to get far.

na, that was before last in 2002, 8 years ago. An average of one footy match almost per decade. Not bad.

At least we got the howler out of the way in the first game. All the best world cup campaigns start with a mediocre first match.

Look on the bright side at lease we havent got the algerian keeper.. check out his glove skills in the algeria v slovenia game. Come on england!
Germans are looking good, even more incentive to avoid 'em.
They're always under-rated going in to most tournies, and usually come out doing well. Best team so far imo.

I hate watching football, but i watched last nights match with Peg and me dad.
England are an embarrassment IMO. They were crap. The look on Beckhams face said it all when Green let the goal in. Hes still green said the commentator, I'm sorry but if hes that new then he shouldn't have been picked for our national squad, Must try harder.
Beckham must have felt sick watching, as after all hes probably just spent x years training half of the US squad!
As for England getting desperate, true to form they resorted to bully boy tactics in the second half, and I've never seen so many cards flinging about. Half the team I've never heard of, and half the team are so old(in football) they should be retiring, as I noted the US team were of younger age and running circles round them
One of the commentators said England played a superb match, well I'm sorry I'm sure we must have been watching a different game to you mate!
My dad made me giggle before the match, he went in the bookies and asked what the odds were for England not scoring a goal all through the cup! The lady said she didn't like that, but he said he wasn't bothered what she thought, he has so much little faith in England doing well, he thought they would be doubtful to score!! Apparently there wasn't such a bet going...I'm surprised!
If he ever gets picked again.
I think that dropping him would wreck any chance of rebuilding his confidence in the short term and might even end his international career. Look at what happened to Paul Robinson after that divot incident.
TBH though, I suspect that both he and DJ are on borrowed time as Joe Hart is the best keeper. It's only his age and lack of international experience that is counting against him this tournament.
Germans are looking good, even more incentive to avoid 'em.

Winning our group is now a must as we will have no chance against zee Germans on current form.

100% +1
although they should really accept this isnt going to be our tourument and play jo hart anyway, give him the tourument experiance get those initial nerves out of the way. Then we can start to have another career england keeper like we did with seaman.
englands out field players on the other hand are just found wanting.
Germany look the business, first game of the WC that I've enjoyed watching. (Has to be said no way was that a red card for Cahill, IMO he'd pulled out only his momentum took him through the man didnt even deserve a yellow, shame that poor decision will cost Cahill his next match too.
Yep a highly entertaining game. Coulda been a lot more, and a repeat of the 8-0 battering Germany dished out to the Saudis in 2002.
Ridiculous red card. The ref looks like someone straight out of scarface. He was pretty poor today.
Incidentally, all the ridicule Green has received is not surprising at all - but...after possible the worst mistake of his career in front of his whole nation and the world, he did pull out a save in the second half that essentially kept England from losing.
Footies a team game, and although his mistake was horrendous, England should be netting more than 1 against the yanks.
Also, is its just me or is anyone getting really peeved off at the broadacasters in S.Africa. They show replays at the worst time, over do the replays so we miss the actual footy being played.
In the Argentina game, every single time something happened we'd get a slow mo of Maradonas reaction. ffs, we wanna watch the footy when they're playing it, and relevant replays in dead ball situations!
what i cant understand is. England, Scotland Ireland and wales are all the United Kingdom so why is there different teams why is there not a UK team instead?
its like saying that the yanks can have a team for every state.

Because our cousins north of Hadrian's Wall would have foisted Scottish goalies on us. And Gordon Strachan would have looked like a Swan Vestas match in a white shirt.

It's because each country has it's own seperate football association.

How lucky were the Japs!?
Cameroon just completely bossed that 2nd half but no matter what they did couldnt score. Japs won with a scrappy from 39mins. lucky lucky lucky
Don't think Japan were just lucky. Their goal was well taken, and well delivered into the box + shoddy cameroon defending. Japan defended very well, and cameroon didn't really create many chances. Cameroon were pretty poor in my opinion.
There have been too many poor games in this world cup so far. Perhaps worst start to a World cup I remember for quite a while.
Japan weren't lucky Cameroon were awful, how Honda (yer that's right Hondas rule) was given that much time to score when there were 3 defenders within 2 yards of him is amazing, he could have mad a cup of tea before putting it on the back of the net.
Only decent game so far has been the Germans, doubt the Italians are going to do anything that exciting tonight either. Seen every game so far but have to work tomorrow so I expect that's when the games will get interesting.

only seen the replay of the goal, and the 2nd half of the game. 90% of it was played in the Japan half of the pitch. I did see Japan nearly get a counter attack goal but other than that it was all cameroon 67% persession in the 2nd half admitantly they did very little with it mind you, a couple of saves and a stonking shot against the crossbar aside.

Some pretty awful games so far, I didn't even bother with the second half of the Italy v Paraguay game.
The games have all been a bit cagey.. looking forward to the brazil v north korea game. I've taken to looking at how wonderful the pitch and stadiums have been. The lighting and quality of the pitch is amazing. Reminds me of the big champions league matches. The south africans have done a great job there ! Shame about the noise but if in rome etc etc etc

Woman at work is south african and has been raving about her brothers firm they've been doing all the flowers and gardens etc (not the pitches) but shes been talking about the pitches, they've been grown under poly tunnels whilst the construction of the stadiums was still going on around them. Not like Wembley where they built a stadium and brought in a pitch, the SA's seem to have built a stadium around some grass lol.
But yeah +1 they've held up fantastically, puts our national stadium to shame.
Agreed with the stadiums - there was a shot of one yesterday (must've been the late game because it was dark outside) it had a jagged sort of transparent roof which glowed from the light inside - looked gorgeous.
those vuvuzelas are the most annoying thing about the whole tournament, but I suppose there's money to be made from them so they aren't going away - as long as they don't turn up at WHL next season I don't mind!

lol, i like your logic.
I know I shouldnt be complaining cos their decisions all seem to have been spot on really but its just a case of in English football a hell of a lot more strength and aggression is allowed.
It allows for a better flow to the game IMO, where as if you blow for every little nudge the game is stop start stop stat an it just ruins it a bit for me.
Its clear that they've been told to follow the rules to the letter, the delegation of Yellow cards is rediculas the one I saw a cameroon player get for continuing to play after the ref had blown for offside. A whistle I didnt hear while watchin, and judging from the players reaction at missing the shot neither did he, he was most suprised to be given a caution lol.
And again for a player the other day, came on in around the 60th minute and was carded instantly for shirt pulling then sent off around the 75th for a handball I think it was (cant argue with that but, it did nothing to the game it wasnt like it creadted/prevented a goal scoring situation. That would just have been a free kick in the prem league.
I see what you mean but it's always the same in the World cup, and at the end of the day the players no the rules as well as the refs.
I think the refs have been told to use discretion with the ignoring the whistle law due to the vuvuzelas, the ref did with that Van Persie the other day.
I think it's cutting down on the petty cheating though, did you notice how that German fella managed to stay on his feet even through some forceful tackles after he had been booked for diving?
Owenski
15-06-10, 01:16 PM
I know which one you mean, the german boggle eye player elham or summa. He was booked for a blatent dive in the first half and then when the keeper came out and caught him he could have gone down but instead just kind of stumbled a bit then gave up chasing the ball.
I worry that england are going to be too scared to play english football for fear of been hated for getting sent off. Its more like a Pro-Evo game at the minute its almost impossible for teams to finish with a full team, what is it currently 12 games played 5 red cards given? 4 of those 5 have come from double yellows. It'll turn into touch football before the tourny is over.
I agree owenski. On the whole theyve been alright but I think it was a German (?!) that got booked for diving, when he it wasn't even really a dive. He kind of just jumped over the defenders tackle to avoid getting taken out, then obviously fell and landed. The ref ran straight up to him and dished out a yellow. It was middle of the park as well. Absolutely ridiculous.
Also, slovakias goal was offside (though on the whole linesman have been good). Let's just hope they don't give the same player 3 yellow cards in one game before they send him off this time.
Ozil, I think it was. Definitely a goggle eyed freak LOL

Exactly, you do that in the prem and the ref just waves you back onto your feet and tells you to stop been a puffy bum.

Portugal - Ronaldo throwing himself to the ground if an opponent comes within 10 feet of him - I so want Ivory Coast to beat them :D
[edit] Fantastic effort from New Zealand earlier to hold Slovakia too - well done to them for showing such spirit
disappointing so far. if this spirals down towards a dirty game, the portugese would get systematically sodomised. ronaldo was bricking it hard when he squared up with that ivory coast player trying to give it mouth.

Well we are 5 days in and frankly it's been shocking. Over cautious, lacking vision, no style just drivvel. The most exciting thing to happen so far is new Zealand equalizing in the last minute.
People are saying England played bad in their game but everyone has been playing poorly, even games that should have been a walk in the park and full of stylish play and goals have been fruitless and dull.
I hope once this first lot of games are out of the way everyone will get their arses in gear and hopefully we'll see more football being played. I've seen more action in a single premier league game than the whole tournament so far.
Anyway rant over. :)
