But isn't that junior staffers wishing they were the boss in his seven series? The badge is what they are after, not the car.
Pete ;)
I think some of it is that yes, but I also think that for their company car allowance it does offer the best value for money in terms of spec etc. Also theres IIRC a long lead time on anything VW / Audi at the moment, so they get their new car quicker if they go down the BMW route as well.

Nah, no way I am buying a Fabia!
I like having a nice car, I drive much better than I ride and I also get a lot of enjoyment from my car so it's much more than an A2B thing really.
Don't dismiss the Fabia VRS (depends if you like the shape of the mk2 fabias)
Though I would keep running the astra since its only 3.

Nah, you don't want the Glof or the beemer. What you need is a Mitsubishi L200 Warrior. Stick some Grabber AT2's on it and, hey presto!! A vehicle for all weathers!! A few posts back, someone said they'd towed a lorry out of a car park with a Golf? Really? I don't think so. Not unless it was downhill anyway.
I've had my L200 for a few months now and, apart from horrendous fuel costs (which I knew about before I got it) I'm really chuffed with it. It'll go pretty well anywhere and will easily drag my mini digger about on the trailer. (available for hire with operator at reasonable rates!! lol)
I dragged loads of peeps out of ditches with it during the snow and it hardly slipped or spun up at all. Its a solidly built truck with a decent level of luxury - and they're a darned site less expensive than either of the cars you're looking at.
Go on Nic, you know you want one!!!!

Rubbish, they are the most popular because they are the best. I could have had a good spec 3 series or low spec 5 series but the Msport spec 1series is the best spec and value for money, tax and contributions than any other brand.
I looked at the octavia, golf, tiguan, freelander etc. The only car I would have had as an alternative was the VW scirocco but it was over a 9 month lead in time, and I couldn't handle driving a golf for that long! Was very tempted by a freelander too but the emissions made it not worth it unfortunately :(
If you actually go and try everything (i took 2 months trying and deciding) rather than being armchair experts and refering to badge stereotypes... Then the quality, spec and actual drive of the Msport 1 series is better than any of the competition.

L200s are not cheap though, and there not nippy and fun to drive.
We have a fleet of 100+ L200s (varying specs), pajeros etc and I wouldn't want any as an everyday car. Nightmare to park, fuel or have fun in unless you enjoy offroading (I don't as it's work lol)

MBK, sorry for the derail, but I think you've got your answer anyway.
G, how has the reliability been on the L200's at your work? My work has had two Animals and they've both been reliability nightmares, regularly blowing turbo hoses, electronics problems, etc. To be fair the guy who was driving them drives like a tit. He had the R32 I was talking about being bad in the snow, and he tries his damnedest to get the same performance from the Animal. They have both been abused and thrashed.
I have a friend who would like to buy something similar, L200, Navara or Ranger.
Our l200s live offroad and get an absolute hammering, some of our sites are 12 miles across most of which is pure mud. They are not unreliable in terms of manufacturing faults, blowing turbos etc. They often get sent away for suspension and driveshafts though. Some have been sent away for drivetrain issues which turned out to be our site staff not clearing layers and layers of mud from the arches.
They rarely do more than 5k before being swapped for new though, so less chance of seeing real issues, they are mainly poverty 'work' spec with higher lift kit, towbar etc, they don't even have aircon etc but are still about £18k I think.

they aren't a nightmare to park - you just push stuff out the way!!!
My 52 plate had 85k on it when I got it and it cost me 4 grand. I' ve had an issue with the engine management light coming on but that turned out to be a faulty sensor. I'm not after having fun in it, well, not driving fun, as its a work vehicle. If I want speed or silliness then I get the mille out!!

I think, on balance, given what I now know about L200's and Ford Rangers, I would probably go for a newer Ranger. L200's although very plush, ARE expensive to run. I wouldn't touch a Navara with a bargepole - they're even thirstier than a L200.
As Ralph said, sorry about the derail hen. Go for the Golf.

it's like a boat!!! I've driven other 4x4's and they are much better to drive IMHO.
Much like like a boring golf then... ;)
I've had all sorts of motors as company cars and my own, but without a doubt the most reliable of the lot was a pikey spec 2003 Golf diesel company car I had. I abused it horribly for three years and 150,000 miles and the thing never cost anything on top of normal service items - it just refused to break down or die on me, despite me trying very very hard to kill it. When I handed it back to the firm on leaving it was still immaculate inside and out, and nothing rattled or squeaked anywhere.
I love my 2001 BMW 3 series, but given a choice of a recent BMW 1 series or Golf, I'd go for the Golf every day of the week.
I've run two Golfs and one 1-Series. I had a 2005 130i SE, a Mk4 Golf Diesel.
The golfs were very competent, cheap to run, and a generally good car. That's about all i can say about it because it just did not have the soul or character the 130i did.
I was like a pocket rocket, 265bhp in a rear wheel drive and light car? Yes please. I got rid of the run-flat tyres which transformed it as well. It was very fast, comfortable for me, though probably would struggle with lots of passengers. I never had any reliability issues, service intervals were long (about 18k compared to 10k standard intervals on the golf) and cheap to do when they did come up. It did 25-30mpg and was the most fun car I have ever had. Quite a drivers car though, meaty (heavy) steering, clutch and gearbox.
I also ran it all through last years Borders snows without getting stuck. Just takes a bit of planning about parking (usually aim to leave it facing downhill or on the flat) or park it slightly further away and walk the last 200metres to the house and stop being lazy! :P
I ran it for 18 months, put 20k+ miles on it, and sold it for £800 less than I bought it for.
I would go out and buy one again in an instant.

sorry for coming in late to this one, and i will admit havn't had chance to read all the thread only bits, but defo GTI, i have a 318d m sport as a company car for about 8 weeks, i personally found it to be quite basic, i think the plastics etc felt cheap, and didn't get on with the drive of it. the biggest positive that i could give it was the size of the boot for the car was really good.
The Golf a very good friend has a 07 (i think) gt TDI and it is great, better MPG, better built, will last longer, holds value better, all together a better car IMO.
also might be worth looking at A3's (sorry if it has been mentioned) we have one that the Mrs uses (i have company car) and it is great, we have the 3 door, has a big boot loads of space in the back still, has all the positives of the golf but some extra bits as well. really comfey, did a trip to the south of france with 4 in the car and all luggage, only stopped once for breakfast and then only fuel stops, sat at around 85/90 on french motorways all the way and still got only a tad under 50MPG (it is the 2.0 TDI) same lump as the gt TDI golf. great car, and a great looking car as well IMO. also holds val really well as well.
+ with an audi every time you take it for a service or MOT you can hope you manage to wangle an R8 for the loan car!!! :-)

In fairness, I don't live in Dumfries and to be honest, we don't tend to get an awful lot of snow here in the west. I am surrounded by coast which kinda keeps the temperatures up a bit more than the east of the region or a bit further north. Yes we have had a bit of snow the past couple of years but not much at all, not compared to the east of our region or strathclyde and further north.
To me, two winters of a little bit of snow is not enough for me to be overly concerned. And we have a 4x4 so if I am really stuck my dad can rescue me!

I think it is like BMW in general. You either love the styling and stuff of them or you hate them. Biggest problem with them is that they are used by so many business men and numpties who don't know how to drive properly so then the car gets labelled the same as the aforementioned numpties...

I hated the whole idea of BMW's and thought people were mugs for buying them, then I test drove one and instantly wanted one. Great thing I like is I can do 300 miles without stopping and get out the other end fresh as a daisy.... i got the 150bhp 320d that goes like stink and like BP said they are mucho fun if you press the button of death
Personally if I can afford to buy beemers when I replace cars I will. Awesome cars

What is the button of death? Traction control? Can I turn that off on the 118d? It's 143bhp so fast enough for me.

Yeah, its usually down by the gear stick, you can switch it off on all of them. But it does get twitchy

golfs are made by vw which owns skoda and audi, so you would in effect be driving a skoda or an audi lol
bmw's are good, but if you are going to spend that money why not look at merc's
merc's aint built like they used to be, my vw passat i used to own and the bm feel far better built.

The dtc on the 1 is above the head unit where the hazard light is. Press once to partially disable, press and hold to fully disable.
First time I switched it off in the wet I was sideways within 15s, was mucho fun! Then I thought about the cost of new tyres and have not really touched it since :D
Traction control is for whimps *evil laugh* My mate wont let mne turn his off in his M3 after i showed him what it did in his old 328i

Welcome to the BMW club, cracking little car, not the fastest but practical and well built. I have had a few and loved them the only faults I ever had was a few sensors packing in but your warranty will cover that if it happens. Don't listen to folk that say they are expensive to service, I have a new style M3 and my last service was £180.

I have paid £300 for 4 years servicing anyway, and that includes ANY servicing needs.

I think (might just be my mind) that the joke is a sexual reference. i.e, a good service ;)
