First off,

A great day but a ****ty evening. Was rear-ended at a roundabout (not sure which one) about 5 mins after leaving Boxhill. Been to hospital and been checked over - thankfully nothing serious.

The duchess, however, is another matter. I don't know what shape she's in as I was pushed into the ambulance pretty quickly - the last glimpse I had was of a car on top of her and brake fluid all over the road.

That said, I did have a fab day out and really enjoyed meeting new faces and riding fun roads. Well done Billy.

Matt, I've had this happen twice, real shock to the system, one resulted in a compacted disk and me off the road for 2 months  , I'm slightly paranoid about it these days and watch the vehicle behind when stopped at lights and stuff.

Anyway, let me know if you need any help, I'm sure if needs be, I'll be able to help.

Right, my day,

Got up, 3.30am (yes, in the morning  ) watched the WSB from Philip island, some great racing.
shoot off down to the Oakdene for Breakfast, got there just after Nine.
proper breakfast, not exactly what the doctor ordered, but hey, we all go sometime, you might as well enjoy the journey.

People started to turn up from 09:30 or so, chin wag, brew, distributed half a dozen route lists (simple to follow, not to much detail, with the map on the back) and we kicked off at the stated time.

soon noticed the clutch I'd abused Saturday carving up a Gixer thou, was going to be "interesting" on this ride.

Started off with good intentions of just being one of the pack, yeah right :!:

Turned on to the A20 on the other side of the roundabout, and pegged it passed Helen, who went with me, i saw the B2016 on the right late and was just about to grab a handful of the excellent triumph brake, and crank it hard over for the turn, quick flick in the mirrors, to find them full of naked SV  , sort of guessed/knew the SV brakes aren't the same so chose to over shoot pointing at the turning, rather than the alternative.

Done a loop and pointed the turning out to those following.

Blatted back to the group when all had passed, I kind of like this as I get to enjoy the run , but still stay it touch with every one.

Merry trundle along and sometime latter my fuel light comes on.
(now this needs explaining, the tank sender stopped working so I fitted an SV one, but the triumph only supports the one sender and not the 2 fitted to the SV unit, thinking I had wired up the top sender unit I guessed I had about 3 ltr of juice left, and being on 86 miles to that tank sort of confirmed it, wrong :!: , 13 miles later, about 4 miles from the main road, the bike died, out of gas, dam  )

Still we'd passed a petrol station a couple of hundred yards back so no biggy, Viney turned around and came back after passing me and asked what the problem was, I explained that I'd only be a few minutes pushing the bike back and filling up, so to go on and I'd catch up, no problem, wrong, bl**dy station closed :? .
pushed the bike towards the village as I was going in that direction, and as luck would have it Tim (forgotten this user name) was on his way down to Lydden to watch the mini-twins and recognised the bike on passing and turned round and came back ( Cheers Tim), anyway I pushed it up to the village pub, and Tim went off and found a petrol station and got me a can and some juice, thanked them and off they went, stopped off at the pub for a quick pint after my physical exertions (those Triumphs are bl**dy heavy you know).

Decided to miss the Rye stop and shoot straight across the A28 to make up some time.

Parked up just on the A229 turning, had a couple of fags waiting.
the guy's came passed so I put on the helmet and started the bike, now I was parked on the pavement and between me and the road was a flower bed, so I shoot down the path and use the first hard standing across the dirt, gun it On to the road, just as AN OLD BILL DISCO COMES ROUND THE CORNER!,Bo**ocks,
"You rode down the pavement, and wheeled off it into the road and was doing at least 50 mph", well being me,I discussed the matter with the officer, and we decide, It wasn't a good idea to cut across the flower bed as it would ruin the flower and the bike could have fallen over, I was coming up to road speed in the shortest time, and the front wheel was just "popped" over the curb Stone., once the officer was sufficiently educated, I was off on my way.

Brisk, run down to Wesson, for a brew,

Set off, fairly swift pace, stopped at a number of junctions to show others the way, let them all pass, then off I'd go and pass them and do the same again, It soon became obvious Matt and Joe were on a bit of a mission (watch those blind overtakes Joe  ), anyway stopped an some more junctions, and let them all go by, and so on, up to the A29, the clutch was giving me some problems, so decided to just maintain speed, and shot down to Boxhill.

Apart from seeing my new petrol can go flying off the back, and thinking "sod it" (sorry Matt), that was the end of the ride for me, a brew at rykers and a bit more chat, then off home.

Good day 9Cheers Billy), I done my own thing (not always through choice) Had a route plan and map, if I wanted to follow them, and was in charge of the "large" control on the bike so decided my own speed, and enjoyed myself. which after all is what it's all about.

Cheers Mark.

Sorry you got caught out Dan, to a certain degree I think this was to do with keeping up - with practise you can be a safe and swift rider, and the more of these things you go on, the better you will get - learn from others.

Yeah - you just need to have a bit of confidence in your convictions & to not be too afraid to open the throttle a little further!
There were so many times today when I was behind you & you were on the right line as you were approaching the corner but you psyched yourself out or something & chenged your line... Go with it mate!! If you F*^k up, on the open roads, you can generally rectify it befor thare's any problem - it's not like London everywhre!

Sorry you got lost though dude - happens to the best of us! And well done for finding them all on unfamiliar turf! :D

Yep, ive got a couple of days advanced training next week, and i've already mentioned that stuff to the guy, along with my london rideing.

Although i've been rideing 2.5years now, most of that has been through london, not had much experance on long twisties. However after this weekend I have a feeling thats going to change! I did 163miles on sat through twisies in tunbridge, grombridge and arround there. Along with the 230odd i did yesterday....OOooh roll on the weekend!

Sorry about the little airing, the pic was ment more tounge in cheek than if i had written out a list of expletives though. Just got a little miffed at being left in the middle of nowhere, being pointed in the wrong direction, no idea where i am and no petrol.

No hard feelings, honest....
Dan :-({|=

Sorry dude, the bike looked ok from the right side and was being wheeled onto a breakdown recovery vehicle. the coppers were there and just taking the driver to their car for a 'chat' at a guess. you take care and let me know what i can do if anything to help!

Wooaaah Esy there guys and girls!

1) THANK You Billy, a great day with brilliant roads and some good company
2) Slagging matches and name callings via PMs please as already stated by Lyn
3) For those who got lost, maps were available to all and the route was pretty well stuck to, I tried to keep the next person in sight but if the whole column has to move at the pace of the slowest rider people get frustrated and bored. I made sure that at all times I had a map, and that I could see someone I was fairly sure knew the route. I stopped at one point to guide the back markers towards Rye, only to find they were'nt behind me as there seemed to have been a traffic split, this didn't encorage me to do it again. :?
4) I would suggest in future people either do their homework and know the route (I didn't bother so am as guilty as anyone else) or make sure they stick in small groups of 3 or 4 people of the same pace and that at least 1 person in this group knows the way. It's not possible to keep a single column of 20 people due to roundabouts and traffic lights, 3-4 seems like the best size for a "sub-pack" (copyright pending :D )
5) Mark, thanks for pointing us in the right direction at times it was appriciated! That said had you not been there I would have pulled over and checked my map.
6) Matt Really sorry dude, keep us posted! :(

Thanks again to Billy I had a brilliant day.

Hey Billy C it was nice to meet you at last and sorry I was only there at the end!

Huge thanks to Lee and Jambo (especially Jambo) for running round Box Hill like loonies trying to Bump start my bike

It's quite strange to cross paths with the result of a Selkent rideout that I didn't know was happening!

There I was on a bit of a blat down to see Minitwins at Lydden, and I flash past a slightly less than fully hirsute bloke pushing a distinctive looking trumpet (and looking like he's been pushing if for quite some miles...)

It only turns out to be Mr Rictus

Glad you got home OK Mark, but I can't believe that you have thrown away that lovely petrol can that I worked so hard to get :D

Might have to join you guys for the next one, sounds like a (mostly) grand day out.

Cheers

Ey

Hiya

Just got online now. Yes also big thanks to Billy for organising the day - was a really great route. I had a really great day and look fwd to joining the gang on future ride outs.

Given comments made by others I would say:

If we set off as a group, we should conclude the day as a group - immaterial of how slow the last rider may be or who is carrying maps/GPS system or not. I fully agree with Viney's comments of before to remedy this.

I don't think it's correct of riders to make criticism or comments of others' riding unless they are a danger/or it is sought. I personally am there for the fun of it - not to be told I've improved from last time or that I'll learn to speed up in the future etc.

I thought the group rode together well as a whole save the one occasion when Riccardo undertook me just before a bend - that freaked me a bit.

Matt, I'm really sorry that your day ended like that. Hope you and the bike make swift recovery.

had it done to me by a mate before.... and it freaked me out too.... its not a nice thing to have done by someone...

bang out of order riding like that in this scenario imho....

unless its a group that rides often enough that you know exactly what lines each other take and are used to it... in which case fair enough but this wasnt...

04-04-05, 06:33 PM
anyone ever did that to me i'd lump em, no matter who they were....

that sort of riding is for the track not for the road

Sounds like it was a good laugh overall, shame I missed it

I know, sorry , got a annoyed that we got lost. Dont usaly undertake. Thought afterwards, woops should not have done that, a bit too risky as the bend was to the left, also there was not much space for me to pass. Dont think i will be doing that again.

TSM

That is exactly why I don't ride in large groups, because some people choose to make stupid moves.

I think it was the only one I did on the day. I usaly dont risk it.

I was the end of the day, only us two, lost from the main group.

Apart from the fact that i undertook(silly), did you see me behind looking left and right a while before I decided to pass. I did not pass so quick, i just dont have the power to.

edited after discussion with TSM.... and after i got off my high horse this evening... :D

but my point of this was if youre on your own then np... but if youre in a rideout other people have to be a consideration in your riding.... otherwise whats the point of going out with other people?

It's not about being better or worse, it's about recognising that undertaking is ludicrously dangerous. Don't get defensive, just don't be that stupid again.

First off, thanks to all for the messages of support - much appreciated.

I have pulled/torn ligaments in my pelvis which is going to put a cramp on my social agenda for a while but otherwise am fine. The bike I will have to wait for news on.

Lastly, I took some photos but not many and the only good ones are below. I especially like the one of Debs eating an ice cream with the now infamous petrol can in the background.
