View Full Version : Welsh Way Round MkIII. Sat 20th May 2006, S Wales
Does anyone fancy giving the route around South Wales another go – maybe we’ll avoid the rain this time and get the route right at the end so avoiding the Motorway.
I've spoken to Jabba, and the proposal is to link up with Hornets Nest (http://p196.ezboard.com/fhornetsnest56467frm8.showMessage?topicID=1749.top ic)
Date/Time/Where meet?
We're posting notice early to give as many as possible time to sort things out...
Sat 20th May only clashes with the BMF Show in Peterborough and the MotoGP is the following day.
Usual meeting point Severn View Services (aka Aust) usual time 11.00am to depart at 11.15am
The route (updated after recce) is here(.pdf) (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/twoponds/nest/WWR3.pdf) or here (.axe Autoroute 2006) (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/twoponds/nest/Aust2CastellCoch_V2.axe)
Jabba will post on the Nest and I'll keep an eye on here
Yet again we will be using the Drop Off (http://www.gwent-advanced-motorists.org/bikes/drop_off_sys.htm)system to mark out route
Same as we did last year concerning the safety element, specifically what we know about each other in the unlikely event of an accident.
A ride-out conducted by another forum was unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident, which resulted in a rider being hospitalised. The sad part of the story is that the other riders only new his forum name, this made it difficult for them to arrange to notify a home contact and for the recovery of his machine etc.
Now this may sound like tempting fate, however, I am a believer in that if there is a plan for the worse, the worse won’t occur.
I suggest that we all print out the “form” below, complete it, no need to hand it to anyone just have it with you, Put it in the map pouch of your tank bag (or somewhere equally obvious).

I'm going to try and get my brother to come along, also a guy at work has just bought an SV, so I'll invite him along to, and a guy in my team has just passed his test and bought a bandit so I'll invite him to if thats OK with everybody.
Dr Rich if you are going to be about can we do the usual meet up at Morrisons at Cribbs ?

I'm based in Blackwood, so happy to meet up with anyone on the way to meeting place if thats ok.

Hello Tiggers and welcome.
Your not that far from me.
We did this run twice last year, the first time was really wet and broke apart towards the end when Ceri when haring off in the wrong direction to chase down and stop some unsuspecting rider he though was Jabba :D .
The second time we used the drop off system but we got separated on the last phase, but we all met up again ok.
This time it will be perfect.
Most of the welsh riders meet up before going over the severn bridge.
Mogs
If theres going to be us lot and a group from the "Hairnets nest" it might be worth ringing the Bluebell Pub(?) a bit closer to the date and leting them know they're going to have a horde of hungry bikers decending upon them!

Good idea, I'll do that, they may need time to get in all the extra burgers that Jabba alone will eat :P
Not much in the way of interest on the Hornets nest yet - maybe?

Except this time it may ACTUALY (hopefully!) be dry!

Your always welcome for a fear ride on the back of mine, although its reckoned to be a horrible experience  But seriously it might just be better than missing out altogether
My recommendation for tapping anyone up for a pillion ride would be Baldyman. Experience, right bike, setup for it, safe (unless there's a van ahead). Sorry Baldyman for advertising your services
Sounds like an chance to meet some of you guys, will try and make this :D

Sorry i just became a 'maybe', missus & kids are away for weekend with her friends :D so i might take this rare opportunity to bimble over to France, I'll let you know for sure closer to the date.
Just done a final recce with Jabba.
The final stages of the route offer a sting in the tail.
Single lane, plenty of pea gravel, and a cement batching plant.
If it's raining we may avoid it.

I herby declare Aust is where I shall go. Doing the Cribbs thing is daft really as Aust is only down the road and by the time we have messed around at both its an extra hour.
Aust Services is now called Severn View Services and is at the english end of the OLD severn bridge, accessed via the M48 which leads off of the M4 signed Chepstow.
Coming from west you can also leave the M5 at Avonmouth, go through Avonmouth itself (enjoying the apocalyptic scenary) and follow signs for Aust that way, coming out right at the M48 rounadbout where Severn View /Aust Services are.
Coming from Cribbs you can take the B road under the Cribbs/M5 junction rounadbout towards Pilning and then Aust. Again you avoid some motorway that way.

Dr Rich do you reckon thats the best way for me and Liz to go if we are coming up the M5 ?

looking at my mapbook.. from what Rich is saying, turn off at Junction 18 on the M5, and get on the A403, which will take you straight to the old severn bridge...

Yes. Just make sure as you go over the avon bridge you turn off for Avonmouth and not the M4something for the NEW severn bridge which is sort of the same turn off lane but immediately afterwards.
Its no quicker but less of a drag than the M5/M4 interchange. Prob no slower, especially if you are already filtering on the M5.
Ah I remember now, M4 all the way but take the old bridge rather than the new

I'll go the back way, as there is less motorway to deal with...

(noticed today that Black Mountain Yamaha has vanished  ) then pootling off to my part of the woods  1000 sheep road, and over the Rhondda... finished around 5 - 6 ish PM at Cardiff Castle last year... which is about an hour and quarter by bike from Bristol.....
so you are the mystery Red SV owner then... we were arguing in the pub who to send out to talk to you.. then luckily Anna came along and did that for us

On this one we normally stay out for the best part of the day (with a pub lunch in the middle), but there's a few sensible break points along the way. Note that this meet is traditionally:
1. A slowish bimble as there's a fair few normally, more of a social
2. Wet
We should be at the RooBar again thurs

at least i have second gear :smt098
OUCH that really hurt... Lucky for me first gear on my bike is like first AND second on the SV and third is like 3, 4 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND 5 on the SV
I'm stopping before I get lynched on Thursday
If I were Mogs, I'd say too much banter in this thread. We should take it to the Mofo's thread
(once a mod, always a mod  )
When are you marching into Poland that BMW has really affected you :o
All the relevent info is in the first post of this thread, so some banter here is not so bad, as long as it doesn't drift too far off topic. I'm as guilty.
p.s. Lemmings, dont know what time yet.... if we can be down by Bassaleg for 10ish.. we can meet with Mogs and Jabba etc... so I think shortly after 9 am we want to be gone from B&Q...
It's only 18 miles from Pontypridd to Bassaleg, and your going to take an hour. First gear it is then  .

My bike will do 60 in 1st ;)
Fuel economy down the drain though...
True, it usualy only takes an hor and a bit for me to get to the bridge from my house.. so make that 9.30 am at B&Q Lemmings..
Im also adding in the fact i will run late... so if I tell myself to be there at 9... I will be there for 9.30...
