Re: Which Shock To Get?
For the rear Ohlins will do you one for around £650, or a GSXR1000 standard unit can be found on eBay for under £100. The question really should be what rear shock can be recommended for the budget of £XXX?
The same for the front, an Ohlins WSBK Spec set of forks is around £10,000 the last time I looked, a GSXR swap can be around the £800 - £1000 mark, or a litre of 15w oil is about £10. Oh and are you looking to do this yourself or not as labor cost the last time I took a bike in to a garage is c.£50 p/h? |

As for doing it yourself, its not actually that bad to do if you have a good set of tools and some equipment to raise the rear like an Abba Stand. |

I'd choose something with a stiffer spring such as a 2008 zx10r shock. Has a spring rate of 9.1 kg/mm and will suit much better. Admitidly it'll be a little more of a faff to fit but once in I reckon it'd perform better. See link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...COvG24gH#gid=1 Up front some K tech .95 springs and fresh oil will do the job nicely and will come in at around £100. Debrix emulators are another £40 or so quid and will again improve the front end. YC is your man for this! |

Even then it's still slightly undersprung at 8.6kg/mm but not too far away and defo a big improvment over standard shock I reckon. |

Try the search function to see if anyone else has done it or go down the gixer thou route (2003/2004) and just cut battery tray (I think) which aint too bad. There are defo threads on here explaining this including photos etc. |

THANKYOU!! i would have NEVER found that. that doesnt look too hard to do, you think this would be better than the zx10 shock because im heavier? i think works out 17 stone full gear and everything ( including a full stomach of KFC)\\:D/ |

I can't find details on the GSXR swap we did, but this might be of some help... |

A dremel or similar will make light work of the battery tray and the swap itself is quite simple. Will prob add an hour or so to the job but personally I think it'd be worth it at 17 stone. Don't get me wrong, the 06 zx10 shock would be an improvement over stock but if your gonna do it you may aswell get the most suitable shock for you. Obviously if budget was bigger an aftermarket ohlins etc would be best but if you wanna do front as well within a 300-400 budget then I'd try the gixer thou shock or research the earlier zx shock I mentioned in earlier post. Choc the front wheel and/or cable tie round front brake & handle, *EDIT*trolley jack & block of wood to add support if you have one. Pic shows the front being held up but priciple is the same... http://forums.sv650.org/picture.php?...pictureid=6373 |

Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
For a £300-£400 budget Id stick a Nitron sport shock built to your weight into the bike (£340 to org members) and a set of K-Tech fork springs for £76.50 and then new oil and set the air gap. Just a tad over £400 but will work miles better than a GSXR shock and the nitron will be worth at least £250 secondhand when you come to sell the bike, unlike the GSXR shock.
Worth considering, the SV has a very good chassis and is worth it if your budget will stretch to it. |

Oh, forgot to say that I have a ZX shock and needed to modify the battery box etc (in fact bought a smaller battery). I would do it again if necessary but a brand new shock for £350 that bolts straight in os probably a better investment IMO. Then again I got my shock for £60 second hand ... |
Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
ZZR1400 shock is pretty much a straight swap. You only need to remove the bit of plastic thats screwed to the side of the battery box with 3x screws. I don't see what purpose it served anyway...

I've got a ZX6 2006 rear on my K9 S. This list gives you all the info you need about what is compatable for the SV.

Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
Just a question, these ZX10R shocks, they add about 10mm height to the bikes rear end if I've been informed correctly? Anyone got a before and after picture at all?
Thanks :) |

I'm only 5'8 and was a tad worried about the rear end rise but I needn't of worried. It's not drastic and the performance of the new shock over the old one makes it well worth it. A 2nd hand lowered seat can be picked up for around £40 if needed. |

Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
Cheers Dkid. To be honest with you, I do want a bit of a rise but I'm reluctant to go down the shock & dog bone route as I've read some **** stuff about this causing tank slappers to be more common. Which I fear deeply
|
Would have to be more of a rise than the 06/07 zx10r shock gives to cause you any worries I suspect.
I have the above shock (8mm longer than stock) and have dropped the front end 5mm through the top yoke. No tank slappers and the bike seems fine at +100 mph (on private roads officer). Turns in quicker than before and a bit easier to flick around. This shock still too soft for the OP though (17 stone). As mentioned, I'm 12 stone and it works well for me. |
Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
cool. I'd love to go down the gsxr rear tail route but can't be arsed with all the machining that needs to go into it. Don't have access to stuff to do it anymore, boooo :(
|
Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
so a zzr1400 would be a straight swap?
|
Re: Which replacement shock for Pointy?
Yes zzr1400 (look on ebay for zx14) shock is identical in shape to the zx10r 06-07 shock but with a spring and valving ideal for a 15-16 stone rider. It is VERY easy to fit. Here are some:
