How to change spark plugs and part number?

Hey all,

I'm a noob when it comes to engines but i'd like to change the spark plugs myself. I have a 2001 SV650S but the engine guide on this site doesn't cover that model. Do I have to remove both fairings before I can drop the radiator forward and remove the front spark plug? Do you need to remove the horn as well?

As for parts, can i buy spark plugs anywhere or does it have to be a bike shop? Does my local Canadian Tire (ie. hardware store) carry them? Is there a part number.. I can't seem to find one.

Hi, yes you will need to remove both of your fairings and also the horn to get to the radiator connections.you can remove all bolts on the rad but don't have to disconnect it completely, just pivot it forwards. it can be awkward but just persist! the rear plug requires you to remove the rider seat and raise the tank up to get to the plug.you can get the plugs at most automotive stores the part number for ngk plug is C8EA and the iridium plug is CR8EIX.good luck and let us know how it goes,freddy

It does indeed make it easier if fairings are removed - but you do not need to remove them.

Pull each side at the bottom so it pops the mount out of the rad.
Undo the bottom bolt on the rad.
Remove the horn - not always necessary.

The rad will then pull forwards and give enough room to get in there. It does make it a heck of a lot easier if you have the SV toolkit as the plug spanner pivots.

Plugs are in.. I used the toolkit that came with the SV... I tell ya, there is not much room by that front plug.. I'll probably have an easier time if I ever do it again now that i've done it once.

The biggest problem I had was with the clip at the bottom of the fairing.. any tips to get that off in one piece or do you guys just break it and put a new one on each time. The little rubber piece that attaches to the windshield by the side mirror was also annoying.

The only thing i'm concerned about is that I didn't have a torque wrench.. I'd have to buy one of the expensive ones because you wouldn't be able to see the readings on a cheap one.. (I don't think anyways.) So i'll save up and get one.. So hopefully I put it on tight enough. The spark plug wrench in the toolkit was like an inch too short, so it was hard to gauge whether or not I did a quarter turn.

I started it up and it sounds fine. I heard that if a bike misfires too much it could mess up the timing.. Is that true? If so, I should probably bring it in for a tune up.

I'll take it for a short spin around the block in the morning and if all is well i'll drive into work. *fingers crossed*
