VAG coilpacks are notoriously lousy. Definitely start there.

If your golf has it, you might want to invest 50 quid in a VAG COM kit, it'll diagnose pretty much anything.

It'll be the coilpack.

Mine went on my 16v, was fine one minute, parked up, went to start it 30 minutes later, wouldnt start.

When I got my golf about a week later I lost power all of a sudden. It was a problem with an electronic part that controlled the spark plugs. Don't know if it will be the same problem as you though, because mine was still firing on a couple of cylinders.
Ask on this forum though, they'll help you out:

Could be many things, if you have no spark check if you are getting a feed and pulsed earth to the coil from the ecu if not then it is more than likely the crankshaft position sensor gone bad as this sends a signal to the ecu telling it what position the engine is, and then the ecu triggers the coil, no cps signal no sparky.

I don't understand how VWs have a good record. I don't know anyone who hasn't hd trouble. Mk3 golf especially!

VWs don't with me, never have done.
The engine's are great; everything else attached to the engine will fall apart!
