Hi guys,
I have an sv650 k8, i had my first servce at around 750 miles and i'm now at 3700 miles on the clock. A few of my friends are going on a tour to switzerland this weekend and should be covering around 1600 miles. I really don't want to miss out on this trip and was hoping someone could give me some guidance. would my sv be fine by going considerably over the 4000 miles mark (as all this 4000 miles service requires is an oil change and tightening of various nuts and bolts) and also is the service 4000 miles from new or 4000 miles from the 1st (750mile) service? any advice would be greatley appreciated. thanks! |

IMHO get it done now before you go. Last thing you want is trouble whilst you are away, mechanics often spot stuff that you might miss.
A few hundred miles here or there isnt going to make much different but a trip round switzerland is going to push you right over your service schedule. IIRC its 4K from new. Like I said personally with that big a trip coming up I'd be looking to get it done before I went away. Or at least be changing the oil myself.

An oil and filter change will cost you £30 in bits and take half an hour to do - so do that before you go an decide on the servicing when you get back. If you are in London, Essential Rubber will do the oil and filter for about £36 on a ride-in and wait basis - which is what oil and a filter cost me last time - and they also get rid of the oil for you - which is probably worth a few quid anyway - its also them that get dirty ![]()

For safety and piece of mind, service your bike first.

To be honest the SV has a very reliable engine and it tends to give you warnings before anything serious is going to happen. If you can not get the bike in for a service just do the basics, check the oil and filter, check the nuts and bolts, check the fluids, and double check the tyres and pressures. |
