Default speedo not working, any sugestions on the problem?

well it seems like my speedo as gone and killed its self i rode home from birmingham in the rain about 45min ago and the speedo was fine perhaps a bit eratic and kept changing the speed like at steady throttle was going from 38-42mph (jumping)

then got home turned the bike off then decided to go to the shop so got on the bike (all seemed fine) then when leaving the shop was folowing a old bloke aparently doing 22mph (felt fsater so was suprised) then dident realy nitice the speed as was in some trafic in the vilage but as i got the the island going in to my estate(new houses) after the island there is a long straight so i 40mph zone but gave it the beans past a merc and it only showed 50mph i was like wtf (8000rpm in 4th) so was like ohh must be playing up but then as i turend in to my road in first ata bout 5500rpm it was only reading 17mph but once again felt faster and at that rpm in generaly doing 27mph (ish)

so i have no idea whats up but the bike was standing in the rain for a good 2 hours so some water maybe got in to the clock or the cable is sticking ? need a new one ?

the cable looks fine althogh there is a zip tie round it so might remove that and see if thats doing any thing, the casing at the bottom of the forks look fine to, so carnt see what the problem is

going to charge the battery see if that helps

the bit is £20 from main dealer, and take it to a garage, shouldnt cost a great deal to whack the front wheel off, n what not

Just ask a friendly bike shop to drop the front wheel off. Put the bike on the side-stand, get them to loosten the axle so it's nearly out of the threaded leg, then pull the bars on the bike so it's supported on the side-stand and the rear wheel. Get them to finish getting the axle off and drop the wheel for a second. If the speedo rotor is buggered little black plastic bits will drop out when they pull it from the wheel.

30 second check that they won't charge you for if they're nice

i thought someone who asked for advice would take it? especially that of YC who i think knows abit about bikes. go to a Garage and ask them for a hand dropping the front wheel out as neeja says it should be a free service if you ask nicely, they fix my steering lock when it breaks on a regular basis (and i go to main dealer)
