Probably a real newbie question but I need an answer.
I lube the chain regularly using the clean with WD40 and a rag then relube method but I have a problem or two. 1. How much lube is enough??? The chain runs well and there seems to be no problems but I'm paranoid about not having enough lube on there. 2. How do I stop lube going on to the back wheel? Last twice i've done the job I've managed to get lube on the back tyre. Ok its just a case of soapy water to wash it off but its a tad annoying..... Thanks fopr your help. |

I think it depends how often you lube as to how much you should put on.
Get a Scottoiler and relax a bit ![]() |

But isn't a Scott Oiler a whole new can of worms??? I've looked at them, had a panic attack at the apparent complexity of fitting one and given up.
How hard to fit are they? |

the stuff on the back wheel is known as fling
some makes are reknown for fling. try castrol chain wax - people speak great things about it - ive just done a 150 mile run yesterday - lubed before i went out - lubed halfway out - and not a trace of fling. i just put loads on - cake it. but thats me ![]() i havent got a scotoiler - but might work out cheaper in the long run. easy to fit aparently - ask some mates to fit it (who know what their doing) or ask a dealer (the more expensive option). |

I was worried about the difficulty of fitting a scottoiler, all the talk of tapping into the vacuum system etc. It turns out to be a total piece of cake, having seen how mine's actually fitted. Deciding where to put it is probably the hardest part.
I'll open another can of worms and mention the WD40 O-Ring Chain Eating Conspiracy Theory... Some people maintain that WD40 contains a solvent that's bad for the rings in an o-ring chain. Others don't. The company have consistently refused to comment on their product's suitability for o-ring chains either way though, which is interesting. Loads of people use WD40 on o-rings with absolutely no obvious ill effects, of course.
