for those of you who have the pointy SV, you will know when you start the bike you hear a buzzing noise. Now im not a mechanic but ive always presumed its something like the automatic choke, or the fuel lines being connected up.
Anyway my bike is only making the noise intermittently. So you turn the key, there is no noise and it wont start. The F.I warning light flashes on the read out aswell. eventually it does make 'the noise' and starts but as I said its intermittent. My mechanical knowledge is shining today as you can see. Ideas anyone? |

My K4 does exactly the same thing.
I originally thought it had something to do with a time delay as it would happen when I put the key into the ignition without turning it to the "on" position. Then once all kitted up, gloves on etc, I would turn the key to start her up and there would be no buzzing noise and the FI warning light would flash. I simply remove the key, re-insert and hay presto it would start. I'd be interested to know what why this happens as well. Cheers T0mm0 |

Im a rider not a mechanic, basically I press the button and it starts. If it goes wrong I send it to the garage. I have no interest in putting on a pair of overalls and getting my tool kit out. In fact I cant think of anything worse lol
So to me its a buzzing noise and yeah tommo, mine makes the noise before I start the engine aswell. Someone will know im sure! |

It is indeed the fuel pump - pumping the fuel around and pressurising the fuel system.
It does not make the noise until you have turned the key to the on position (as there is no electricity running round the bike until this point, and it could be mighty dangerous if it did!!) but you will not hear it doing it when the engine is running. It will make the whirring sound every time the ignition is cut & re-connected (be it via the key, the kill switch or one of the fail-safes built into the bike). If you turn your bike's iginition off and on again relatively quickly after it has primed the fuel system, it may not need to do it again, so you won't hear the whirring! It has nothing to do with the key being removed from the ignition. If you are experiencing problems with it - take it back to your dealer for warranty work (as your bike is a K4!) |

Thanks coombest - Its very peculiar that it sometimes happens. Admittedly, recently its becoming more and more infrequent.
Do you think it could be a faulty ignition barrel ? Anyway I shall bring it up with the garage next time its being serviced. Thanks T0mm0 |
