Default Altberg boots....

Hi all. I'm in the market for a pair of boots and fancy the Altberg Clubman classics. Anyone had experience of these?

I have rather...ahem...slim calves and find that most boots I've tried feel like wellies around my little pins! Like a high boot with a tight fit. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Rich

A friend of mine has a pair. Although they have no armour whatsoever (so bear this in mind) they're a superbly made boot, are warm and don't let in water. They're also not for the fat of calf so you just might be okay .

I've got the Altberg Clubman Classic with the velcro fastenings (as opposed to buckles).

Yes they're totally waterproof (so far anyway!) Make sure you confirm you want waterproof because they will make with/without the membrane. Use the "ledergris" they supply, it works!

I went to the factory to check sizing. I found their boots tend to be generous in fitting, such that they decided I needed a narrow fitting. I ordered some walking boots from them which arrived exactly on time, albeit after 8 weeks wait. They are excellent.

They were going to make the bike boots to order but then the guy remembered that they had a pair od 10's in stock which had been made "slightly" narrow by mistake, and they suited me perfectly. I preferred the Classic to the Continental (basically the same but slightly shorter).

As jonboy says they don't have armour as such, but do have extra layers of leather reinforcement and padding and are certainly very sturdy. They are CE approved as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), I forget what standard that is though. The midsole (the "chassis" of the boot) is very strong and there is virtually no torsion, and as such will protect the foot against crush/twisting pretty well I reckon. It's the midsole used in climbing boots. The sole is as used in a hard surface walking boot and is therefore durable and comfortable.

They can make to your requirements so I think they'd happily make the calf to suit you.

I recently wore them for a couple of thousand miles in Europe, dry feet in several hours rain, and while they are warm in cold weather they weren't too hot in 30C. Very comfortable too.

In summary a very well made boot, very sturdy and comfortable, and very good value especially when made to your requirements. Other boots "may" give ultimately better protection but they are so tough that I'm happy to use them, and I reckon they'll protect you better than a lot of bike boots out there.

They are quite thick from sole to top of toe, and I've had to adjust the gear pedals high to be able to get under for upshifts, but once adjusted it's absolutely fine.

Thanks for the low down embee!

Altberg do sound like a good choice, plus I hear their aftersales and re-furbishment service is good. Plus, I don't really like the sport type boots with all the protection stuff. Altberg Clubman classic with velcro, huh? Think I'll go get me a pair!

Got my Continental Tourer Microlites a week ago and I am dead impressed.

Took nearly 2 months to arrive!

At first I was a bit alarmed 'cos they were so tight to get on, but once into the boot the fit is perfect.

They started softening up very quickly. At first I had trouble fitting them under the (adjusted) gear lever, but the height of the boot above the foot has already dropped with wearing in.

They did cost nearly £120 but I have mates who have had them for years. And this is cheap compared to people like Sidi, Alpinestars and Daytona.

My only criticism is a lack of shin protection. The shin is heavily padded but not enough.

I've just ordered a pair of Altberg Hogg High all-weather boots as I've gotten fed up of leaking boots. A colleague has done 80K miles in his and whilst they don't look like new, they don't look tatty either. Will let you all know what they're like when they arrive (end of January).
