Drill the middle and then use a left hand thread stud removing whatsit. Looks like a plug with a shallow LH thread on it.

Have you tried molegrips?

Failing that, try using a hacksaw to cut a groove in the centre of the bolt and then un-screwing it with a screwdriver or other such implement.

Also, a small amount of WD40 or squirted round the bolt works wonders.

Good luck dude.

With the amount protruding I'd defo give a pair of molegrips a shot!! ) if that doesn't work you are down to a drill and some of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5pc-stud-screw...QQcmdZViewItem

I don't really like using them as if they break off in there you are totally screwed as you can't drill it!!

Your final option is just to drill it out and either fit a slightly bigger stud, or 'helicol' a new thread in there of the same size. Helecoil sets are dear, so I'd go for a slightly bigger stud and a tap route.

I think you stand a good chance with the moleys though

They're the things I mean! They are good but like Blue_ says you have to feel as you do it so you don't overdo them. They pretty brittle!

Or weld nut on there and use a spanner ... else you will only have to cut the bar off after a millionth of a turn and still have a stud to remove

Thanks for all your help. I initially tried using grips but they just slipped. The problem is that I think the bolt is cross threaded because when I was removing it, it seemed to be at a slight angle and was extremely tight compared to the other bolt. I've got a pair of ancient mole grips so I'll give that a try.

as a tip, if the mole grip jaws are wider than the stud, then get another stud/bolt and put it end to end with the one you want to remove ... this will prevent the molegrips from 'angling' and then just rounding off. Make sense?

Oh and use a blowtorch to head the alli around the stud first, the alli will expand quicker than the stud and therefore might give you that little bit you need

Have to say though, it is looking like Mr Drill is going to be visiting a engine near you soon
