I got the new Yuasa high cold-cranking output (CCA) battery last year, it really makes a difference in really bad starting conditions- such as digging it out of a snowdrift one day then riding to work, or finding it with a thick sheet of ice down one side after a day in freezing rain at work. It just spins the starter faster and harder, as well as having a higher capacity than standard. Wee bit more expensive than standard, but not massively.

Also, iridium plugs seem to help a little in cold and wet starts... Make no difference ay other time that I can tell, though. Still no use if the battery's not up to scratch though.

Ihad exactly the same proble last winter (2001 carbed). Made worse when it would start, run for 5 seconds, flood and die. Firstly I made a point of turning off the lights when starting on a cold morning (usually just left them switched on). This helped a bit, but when it got really cold got the same problem. Then I invested in an opti-mate and have never looked back.

Started on the button first time every time all winter. Left the plug hanging ouf of the gap where my grab handle used to be so didn't even have to take the seat off.

Also switched to super unleaded which stopped the stalling problem and gave me about 20 more miles to a tank so more than paid for itself.

Can't remember where from. Embee might remember, he was good enough to point me in the right direction when I got mine... Or, I think they're recommended fitment for Deuvilles so a Hinda dealer might be a good bet?

I think it's a YTZ12S. It's a little taller than standard but it fits fine if you take away the wee plastic fusebox retainer thing, it's just a pain in the bum anyway. Think you have a curvy, anyway? The 14S would fit, but it was really expensive.

Just had a wee google, and the only one I found was

http://www.inter-bike.co.uk/inter-bi...FQ3lVgodygi5KQ

But it's £55 I paid £45, I think. IMO, £55 is still worth it, but it's not cheap...

My '01 SV don't like cold mornings either... But when I talk some nice things to her and give choke(???) she starts kindly.

Offtopic...

Oh... Ride a bike in the winter... Well, I can only dream about it

10 to 15cm (1cm ~ 0,393in) snow, -5-25C degrees cold.

There is allready some snow in Lapland...

Went on the Varta site, and they don't seem to quite match, but close

YTZ12ABS (Yuasa) is standard for the SV according to Yuasa. 150x87x105, 9.5ah, 175CCA

The YTZ14S (Yuasa) is the one that was too rich for my money, 150x87x110, 11.2ah, 230CCA

The YTZ12S (Yuasa) is the one I got, 150x87x110, 11ah, 210CCA

And the Vartas...

509901020 is the one supposed to be the same as the YTZ12S, but according to Varta's site is the same size and just 9ah. They don't quote the CCA(PS) figure as Yuasa do, but quote cold test current which is sort of similiar., 200EN(A) whatever that is.

501902023 is the YTZ14S equivalent, same size and 11ah. Cold test current is quoted as 230EN(A).

So, they might be the same, or they might not It could be just that tey're using different measurement standards, or that one or the other of the websites is wrong. Anyone better informed?

Excellent find though, even if they're not exactly the same they might be a better option. They'll all fit either SV, though curvies will lack headroom and probably need the fusebox holder removed. As far as I'm concerned, no loss at all that.

Northy has summed it all up.

My Deauville came new from the dealer fitted with a YTZ10S, which wasn't the specified battery for the model but is listed for several Honda models so I guess they happened to have one on the shelf. Even the 10 spins it pretty fast when cold, so a YTZ12S should be a scorcher. The battery specified for it only gives a cold cranking current of 120Amps, which puts things into perspective, the YTZ range of batteries really are a big improvement.

Iridium plugs will genuinely help cold starting, so £15 well spent I'd suggest.
