There are cheaper alternatives (acumen) but they don't work directly off the CPU and are therefore not as accurate. They also need programming, while the beauty of the GiPro is that it simply plugs into the dealer mode socket under the seat. I know its expensive and an extravagance but it is a birthday present after all.

Anyone know which pins and the encoding that this thing uses to read the current gear ?

Shouldnt take brain surgery to put something like this together

yeah i looked at doing one - seems entirely possible. The gear position sensor provides a different resistance for each gear - the values are listed in the workshop manual.

Hmm and as I know of a certain programmable microcontroller that can read input resistance and then output to a 7-segment display...........

The GI thought each gear was higher than it was, (i.e that magic 7th gear), it didn't like the down for first then up for second, it knew each gear was separate but missed gear 2, I had to push a button (hold it for 5 seconds or something) and it would cycle from gear 1 to 6 and you would change gear to suit, once it had recalibrated the gears it was spot on
