12V socket
im possibly driving to the moto gp in catalunya, and i want to buy a 12v socket to charge my iphone while im driving, i have one question about these tho, i know they come with fuses, but when the bike is up at running the socket will be getting like 14.5v, which im suspecting might be damaging to my iphone
i had a cheap Chinese plug>usb charger for my ipod touch a while back which ran at 5.2v rather than the 5v a usb port is ment to be, and this properly messed up the touch screen, so an extra 2.5v worries me is this a problem? |

Re: 12V socket
Just charge it while you stop?

Re: 12V socket
Could you not put a resistor in the circuit?

Re: 12V socket
Its the same voltage as you get through a car charger? Surely proper iphone ones are suited for this?

Re: 12V socket
In theory.
Buy a cheapo 12v connector. Buy needed fuse. Buy OEM Apple charger. Thats what I did when I made mine, just wasnt an iPhone. Havent tried charging it with the bike running though... :\ Wait for someone with more electrical sense than me. |

I would expect a car socket to go even higher than the SV's, as I believe cars tend to charge at a slightly higher voltage than bikes, which is why they recommend jump starting a bike from a car with the car engine off, or else the reg/rec gets fried.

Re: 12V socket
I put a power socket on the bike. In Tesco i found a Griffin plug that goes into the socket. It has 2 usb connections and it came with a black iphone usb charger lead. Works very well and powers my satnav as well as charges the phone no troubles at all. Only cost under 12 quid. I had originally got a plug that goes in the power socket and has connection for a single usb, from ebay but that was crap and did not work.
This is what i got and has a resettable fuse http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...owerjoltiphone Last edited by TC3; 03-02-10 at 01:06 PM. |
