A friend who works in the avaition industry teaching pilots has suggested a possibilty is the aircraft had actually run out of fuel coming into land.

That may explain the lack of fire.

No way surely, if they were that low they would know about it and would have diverted to somewhere closer!!

Perhaps they were in a holding pattern around the airfield, they could have been brought to land by ATC because of their fuel situation. They must of had less then anticipated. Just a possibility.

if it ran out of fuel and only just made the airport, that is a massive bollock dropped by BA, planes normally have loads in reserve for diverts etc!! the biggest Q for me is why the missed the runway??

Bet Dicky is loving this:

Among the planes delayed at Heathrow was a chartered British Airways 747 due to take Gordon Brown to Beijing for an official visit, accompanied by 25 leading businessmen including Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson.

Why would he be taking a BA flight and not a Virgin Flight or does he not own that part anymore?

Possibly because he wasn't paying for the flight, and was a "guest" of someone else who booked the flights?

i just rode past it on my way home from Raf's house. they had everything shut down. couldn't even get to the m4 but the a30 was still open.

cars kept veering into me cause they were too busy looking to their left rather than where they were driving.

there was nothing on fire, and the amount of emergency service vehicles would have been enough to contain a whole city.

crossing fingers for my flight next week...
