Why would a school threaten to "kick out" what is described by Maria as a model student? Would it not be in their best interests, given the current focus on results and league tables to retain her at all costs?
I was a straight-A student, sitting my exams earlier (by choice), doing more than average A-levels in harder-than-average subjects, doing tons of extra-curricular activities and was still threatened with action for not attending "compulsory" classes and going home when my schedule said I was in.

Nothing ever happened, but I think they feel the need to get out a big stick. They have to be seen to be trying to enforce the rules. I think that going in and speaking to the head is an excellent idea - he's probably going to be quite reasonable about the whole thing.

Probably.

Sounds like the old addage that "the nail that sticks out gets whacked" holds some truth.

I agree with Einstein that "Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth" however, there are ways of going about challenging that authority.

Thinking it through, understanding the position of the other parties, and proposing a win-win solution with your challenge will usually yield better results than just disobeying and fighting the inevitable response.

That's a lesson worth learning.

So she is effectivly complaining about gettin a telling off for breaking a rule she was fully aware of ??

So because she was not given a warning its all not fair and the school should change their rules to suit here, just so she can bunk off and turn up when she feels like it, thats about it yes??

How unfai she wasent given a warning! boo hoo.

Sorry officer you cant do me for murder, i wasent given a warning it was against the law!! WTF!!!!!!!

So was this (i assume) letter sent to all 6th form students or just to her?

I suspect it can't have been sent only to her, as if she had been in full attendence why would she be singled out?

If it was a letter to all students, and she was in full attendence, then this should have posed no issue to her as she would have been compliant by default.

I fail to see how this became such a burning issue.

But she must have known that it is expected to turn up on time?? common sense dictates that surely?

What sort of defence is that, i was not told i could not do something i though would be wrong. so i went ahead and done it any way!

Ignorance is not an excuse!!

So she wasn't in full attendence even though she thought she was, is that it?

If she wasn't going in and thereby breaking the unknown rule, but all of her friends were attending then I would have thought she'd have noticed.

If all the 6th formers were breaking the unknown rule, she'd not have been singled out.

Sorry, this reeks of BS.
