Lol, that make me a guardian reading whinging lefty then?

If you want to turn up at 9am sharp to do something utterly pointless, then go get a job which has you painting coal or something. I could think of just the career for those of you who want a load of rules to blindly obey...

I am looking at schools for my daughter at the moment, tonight i am taking her to the walsall academy which is abit posh and strict (selective entry)http://www.walsallacademy.com/facilities.html i don't think shes got much chance of getting in with only 68 places out of the catchment area if she does get in i think i may be in for a long battle with her because she just wants to go to the school all her mates are going to.

Maths - that's what calculators are for
Science - if the increasingly vocal creationists get their way then the only science book you'll need is The Book of Genesis
Physics - see above
Languages - English & Chinese is all you need, if you speak one of those you don't need to worry about the others

More than a hint of sarcasm in the above by the way - what I really wanted to say is that Media Studies isn't the wishy washy course you think it is, I confess I used to think the same till my little brother did a degree in it; hell I thought it during his degree too. But since leaving he's had an extremely succesful career in journalism and he's very good at his job. Regardless of what you might think of the profession we all rely on journalists far more than you think, my 'lil bro has worked for national newspapers and his skill with language is awe inspiring, his written work is actually a real pleasure to read.

My cousin is like that - good career in journalism. Except he has a Geography degree. Most degrees are worth bugger all once you get your first job - they do show application though.

Chuckle, good point Although I would argue that journalists were a far more effective opposition party than Neil Kinnock was in the late eighties and they're a far more effective opposition than Tony Cameron is in the late naughties; I'm a liberal leftie second, and a believer in democracy first - government, of any flavour, requires an effective opposition.

The problem is that we are increasingly relying on people with a maths/physics/engineering background coming in from other countries( I should know...I am originally from further south on the african continent) to work in construction, engineering and technical fields. How many kids do you know who doing the correct A/AS levels to be able to fully understand the concepts demanded by such highly skilled and sought-after degrees?

I agree that we need journalists but the ones we have at the moment are, as said before, doing more scaremongering than anything else.

Anyway, Maria, I hope your sis has sorted her issues out...and all the best to her for the future!

And two fingers(very British) up to all you lefty guardian reading pot-smoking hippies

This thread still going huh

was just thinking the other day, I used to bunk off P.E. and go study maths towards the end of my final year of school. Much better use of my time

Jdub, you have a good point. Its fashionable now to go study art and media related subjects; many college's and universities may well fall through if they didn't have the large amount of those students paying their fees! Few people have a desire to study maths and sciences, mostly because they are A) taught bad from an early age, B) don't know what these subjects do for us in the real world and C) can't be bothered to put in a bit of effort to understand something a bit challenging

+1. I never read this thread when I first saw it because for some reason I switched off at the word legal in the thread title However, I am utterly taken aback by what I have just read, not only some seriously cutting posts but completely unnecessary comments! I thought the .org was a bit better than this

Thank goodness for that, let's hope he comes back a bit more level-headed although I very much doubt he will

Maria, this whole situation sounds a bit ridiculous to me, your sister is old enough to make her own decisions as people have mentioned, she sounds like she knows exactly what she's doing for her own educational benefit, and she has every right to! When I attended sixth form I lived too far away from school to pop back and carry out my work there unfortunately so I ended up spending a considerable amount of time trying to kill time between infrequent lessons. The number of eejits in my year who messed about and were only attending what lessons they had for that EMA allowance thing made concentration efforts flippin' difficult which certainly didn't make life any easier either.

What p!ssed me off the most was the number of lessons that were cancelled by the teachers without prior warning, and when you'd travelled 20 miles to get there on time.... If I had had the option to go home which I fortunately did for half the week then I took it up but I always attended whatever lessons I was timetabled to have

I sincerely hope she gets this sorted.

And breathe....
