No difference imo. 2nd gen cases are better just for fact they are deeper and oil pick up is little better. Still not fix if you like wheelies . In same time they are worst in other aspects.

cool, interesting that they haven't changed them for the newer models if there are still design flaws

Design flaws are not issue if bike is used as intended. Street guys don't have much problems, it is racers that find flaws

bought! - 01 gearbox with 8k miles on it (so they say!), you take yer chances.

Thanks for the advice!

btw. i noticed loads of flaws in the cases when i split it, the area between the crank and maximum downstroke of the pistons doesnt 'meet' when the two cases come together, plus loads of raggy edges around that area!

Little under 2mm difference.
I'm reviewing this thread before i put the cases together, your earlier post says it's the driveshaft that's different but this post says otherwise. Plus i dont know what you mean by 'countershaft'. All i can see in the official manuals ar transmission and drive shaft. If you can re-clarify this i would be grateful!

Drive shaft is obvious (drives sprocket), the countershaft is the other one because it spins counter to the driving (crank) and driven (output) shafts.

Yep, drive shaft is the one with sprocket.

Ok, so i should check my transmission (countershaft) lengths just in case?

sorry for going on a bit but i am being very, very cautious. the missing taper on the gear on the transmission kinda freaked me out ....
