One of these kits is a much better option I think. Combine one of these with new bulbs and you'll see into other dimensions etc.

My upgrade cost about £35, then again I used 3 relays and covered all the wiring in heat shrink to make it look like a pro job, fitted my Nautilus horn while I was at it.

Im assuming you went out and bought relays and all your components from a shop rather than simply pull em out of a car at the scrappies

I, luckily, tend to have everything i need to make looms kicking about the garage/workshop, so never really costs me anything but time

Aye I bought everything new from vehicle wiring products, the voltage drop went from about 2.5v to 0.17 so it made quite a differance to the light output.

Can you safely fit a higher wattage bulb? I know they said off road and rally use only, but are there any dangers to fitting it to the bike? Assuming it would generate more heat, but would it be enough to melt/damage anything?

The wire harness may take it but I would say there is a fair chance of doing some damage to the reflector housing. Halogen incandescent bulbs are very inefficient light sources generating 10-20% light and 80-90% heat. The temperature of the bulb will increase much rapidly than the light output so I wouldn't put anything more than what the manufacturer specified.
