If you have a reasonable amount of sim time, transferring your sim skills across to 3 dimensions shouldn't provide any issues. If you only want to fly in the garden then a 450 would be plenty, perhaps even consider a 250 (they are a lot quicker though). a 500 is about 3/4 the size of a .30, typically with a rotor dia. of 900mm.

A 500 would be better later, as whether wing or heli I want to try FPV cameras and stuff and it would hoik the weight better. Was looking at the hobbyking 450 kits, dead cheap compared to the £1000+ it was for a ,30 when I first started out with it (or didn't, for that reason!)

Mate, I stopped counting many years ago. I think if I added up what I have spent over the years I'd finish up topping myself. I currently have 9 heli's in my fleet including a couple of 500's, 3 600's (2 of which are nitro) a Gaui 200, Century Predator .60 (cheap to a good home but needs radio) and some small indoor heli's. On top of that lot I have approx 15 aeroplanes too (lost count).I suppose you could say I am an addict.

That would be big enough to be stable

Oh yeah 61" rotor diameter. Big and powerful. It flys great and has real presence in the air too.

What sort of flight times do you get with that? And how much does it end up costing to run, I seem to remember them gobbling down expensive 30% at a hilarious rate!

Flight times are around 20 minutes, it carries 24 fl/oz of fuel. running costs are not too bad because it runs well on lower nitro fuel so a mortgage isn't required. It's not really geared for smackdown 3D flight more for FAI style aerobatics. A modern .50 class machine with a Hyper .50 or similar motor actually costs more to feed along with much shorter (8 minute) flight times on high nitro fuel. It's been out of use now for some time. It's literally propped in the corner of the back room gathering dust. I'll let it go for £150 with spare blades, engine and pipe, I might even be able to rustle up a gyro too. It just needs radio installing and setting up.

I think that's a bit much of a machine for what I want to do, but it's really tempting and would make an absolute bargain for someone.

Still not sure whether to try helis or not or to build something like this

Definitely too big for garden flying, I know I've tried and succeeded but it's very antisocial. A 450 would be the way to go, if you do decide to go for it.

Those wings are pretty cool and great fun to fly, would make a great platform for FPV but be aware of CAA regulations regarding the use of FPV here in England. You could find yourself in deep water if you're not careful.
