Don't use anything with solvents in- ie WD40- apparently it can attack the cable lining. I used the old "engine oil in a bag" trick- get a plastic bag, put in some engine oil, attach it very tightly to the end of the cable, and squeeze gently. You can also push and pull the cable slightly as well to help the process.

a lot of cables are nylon lined, and nylon absorbs oil (and moisture) to some extent.

I use Halfords aerosol "nylon&rubber lube", which I suspect is basically silicone oil, seems ideal.

£10 for a new clutch cable sounds a no-brainer to me.

have you had the airbox off and cleaned/lubed the carb end of things? It does tend to get a bit cruddy in there sometimes
