Default Thirty-one years and counting

Rush are one of my favourite bands.

The Rush In Rio DVD is fantastic. Watching about 60,000 Brazilians going mental and singing along to YYZ -- an instrumental -- is quite a sight. The drum solo, El Baterista, was even nominated for a Grammy!

I first saw them back in 1983, on the Signals tour, and then 1987 when they toured Hold Your Fire. In fact, I was in the NEC audience when they recorded the Show Of Hands live album and video.

I missed them when they came over on the Roll Your Bones tour, but made up for it when I went to see them three times on the R30 thirtieth anniversay tour in 2004: twice at Wembley and once at the NEC. The second Wembley show was spot on: third row, right in front of stage left, so I could witness Geddy Lee's "flamenco bass" technique at close quaters. They did a cracking Red Barchetta and it was great to see Between The Wheels and Xanadu played live.

You can get the Frankfurt R30 show on DVD now, too. Whilst it doesn't have the energy of the Rio show, the actual recording is better and you get a load of old interviews and archive footage on the second disc.

Neil Peart is also a keen motorcyclist and rides between most of the shows on his BMW GS. He's even written a book -- Ghost Rider : Travels On The Healing Road -- about the journeys he took in North America after the deaths of his wife and daughter.

tim, i had lost track of rush for about the last five/six years. as it turns out on the rio dvd, they do say they have been out of the limelight for five years approx.
i new niel peart had personal issues but had no idea it was so drastic. the guy is an absolute rock to come back and play. respect.
i will keep an eye out for his book. thanks for mentioning it.

Here ya go

Personally speaking, at the mo, I've been listening to Swedish guitarist Mattias Eklundh's band Freak Kitchen. They're one on the bands signed to Steve Vai's label and can't you just tell it

Saw Rush on the 'Exit stage left' tour at Ingleston market - yup - truly fantastic - agree with al of the above - and isn't it great when everybody knows the lyrics... Haven't listened to any of their stuff since they released 'Signals'. Might have to catch up...

Saw Judas Priest last year - oh wow Deaf for three days!!

It was the most amazing thing...went to see 'Bill & Ben' (yup - the flowerpot men) with the missus & kids. They foolishly allowed me to go get the icecreams at half time - I came back with 4 ninety-nines and two tickets for Judas Priest supported by.....Scorpions!! Oh yes. I recommend Bill & ben to all my friends!!

By the way - both bands were superb, not only deaf but couldn't punch the smile from my face for a week - still makes me grin now.
