The page has bee updated and there are some links to some photos now...

Quote:
An airport worker told the BBC the pilot on the Boeing 777 had said he had lost all power, and had been forced to glide the plane in to land.
All BA short-haul flights from Heathrow have been cancelled and others delayed.
The worker also said the pilot had told him all the electronics had also failed.
"He said he had no warning - it just went," the worker added.
"It's a miracle. The man deserves a medal as big as a frying pan."
BA refused to comment on the report and said it would not speculate on the cause of the crash.

you'd be surprised how close the planes are to running out of fuel when they land; every kg transported uses additional fuel and causes more stress on the airframe on landing. Airlines have a very small profit margin so run as close to running out of fuel as they can. If you sit on a runway for 45 mins delayed; chances are they'll add more fuel as you won't have sufficient.

A 777 would land on one engine so that's one monster systems failure otherwise!

Just getting on a plane in Milan for my fortnightly trip back to the UK. Should be ok as I am flying a budget airline and they cant afford to writeoff planes like BA.

After swerving several times the pilot missed Brown's motorcade on the adjacent A30 and hit the runway Damn that was close.

A friend of mine is cabin crew at BA and her other half is a first officer (sits beside captain) on 777's. I phoned last night to make sure they weren't involved.

Apparently a big clue is that the intake for the auxiliary power unit (in the tail) was open as it landed, indicating the APU was running. If one engine goes the crew can start the APU to get power to try to restart the main engine, but obviously this takes time. If both engines fail the APU will automatically start, which indicates that this is very likely to be the case here.

He said they glide OK with no power but course correction loses a lot of height, also with the landing gear down they drop like stones, so the pilot would have left the banking to the very last moment if the priority was getting over the perimeter fence, which fits with what happened.
