Expensive stuff but by god does it work. It's about £30 a roll i think but if your worried about water damage it will never leak again. Also handy to have to repair any burst water pipes.

I would check the electrical system as your shorting or frying the loom.

eeek...

Well we never had any problems with it electrically, apart from the time we didnt do up the battery terminals properly. Apart from that it had been trouble free.

I cant remember but is there anywhere underneath there where the loom could have rubbed against anything and worn the outer through which has resulted in what you are seeing now ?

Hmmm...it sure looks like it's blown as opposed to worn, but then, unless I am mistaken, it's the main ignition which goes to the reg/rec and the main fuse, which I would have expected to blow before the cable surely?

Anyway, it explains the lack of fuel pump clicking/whirring and also the lack of LCD display as the schematic shows it links to both the fuel system and LCD too.

What goes on with problem solving on some forums...
"complete failure of all data going from clocks to ECU, obvious serious electrical problem"
Response: "clean out the fuel lines"
Eeeeh?

May I add when smoke is rising from the wiring loom, the fuel pump is gushing 2 gallons a minute of unleaded down your trousers and the clocks are flashing a C666 (a f*** you error, according to unofficial manual).... you need to check your tyre pressures!!

That green sh*t is just corrosion that appears to have made its way in from the cuts in insulation. I guess moving fusebox cos of new shock caused this rubbing? Or did you cut insulation to inspect wire just now?

You need to strip loom and replace that wire and any others, you could just bodge it with soldering wire in but it will just rot somewhere else then.

Nope, not my K8, this is a project that I got from Fizz...the wire is exactly how it looked when I found it...except I cleaned it a little in the second pic. Looks like it's been fooked for a while, although the bike has been stood for nearly 2yrs I think.

Hmmm..so stripping it back to a good section and piecing a new length in would not be recommended? I know the answer to that as I type I guess....looks like I'll be stripping the loom tomogs then

EDIT: Oh...and by the way...the tyre pressures seem fine

You could strip it back to a good section and replace that bit, just make sure you get right into good copper. Corrosion travels a long way.

I would also recommend stripping outer case of loom in that whole area to check for more chaffed/cut/burnt/corroded wires.

Ta la - I still think it looks like it's blown and then corroded, especially as corrosion wouldn't affect the insulation! Doesn't appear to be anything for it to rub against either, it was zip tied up off the undertray on part of the frame so was clear underneath.

Corrosion can affect insulation, it causes high resistance which becomes a hot-spot and burns through it.

So either you had corrosion first, or damage first, there is no way for a wire to "blow". Fuse would stop it from melting if it had over-current state going on.

Ah...interesting.

So, today I'll be stripping it back then splicing a new piece in with solder and heatshrink.

The oil can be dropped while I do that!
