ha, we're not at Uni now!

The scam built on the idea of getting a person to dial a number and being charged without realising. They were able to transfer you from an existing call after a short period of time, onto a line that was chargeable.

Cant find a citation, but remember reading it.

It still needs interaction from the person being called, so can't be "sneaked" in on you as your post suggests.

Fair enough, personally I wont be taking the risk (or wasting an hour of my life). Hang up and move on.

Yes, that's still you calling them, not them calling you. SK is right, they can't just call you and start charging you money otherwise everyone's phone would be ringing constantly with scammers doing just that.

When we were on holiday in Egypt our Aussie mate bought a packet of postcards in Cairo then everywhere else we went he waited until the hawkers tried to sell him some bit of tat and he whipped out the postcards and started offering them to them at a very good price. He would proceed to tell them he would make them a good offer, not tourist price. Really going for the hard sell - "Look at the quality - see all the beautiful pictures..." etc. The Egyptians were very confused and quickly moved on to the next group of suckers.

There is no risk tho.

As for wasting an hour of your life, fair enough, but as I was still doing other stuff (playing Minecraft if you must know) it wasn't really a waste, it doesnt take much to just say "yes, no, OMG my monkey is on fire"

Next time I might fire up SWTOR and just do a running comentary "Eat Darkside lightning Jedi Scum..."
