Damn. As in a direct supply from the battery with a relay from the stock plugs to let the relay know when to turn on the hids. Crap. Where am I gonna get one of those in the UK?

Also inside the control box there will be either two diodes or a changeover relays that swiches on the relay that powers the ballast

Some kits don't have all the kit
It might be like this

You have to buy that relay extra

If you are sure it's dead then yes.
Have you checked the +Ve and grounds. This includes the original on the H4 connector
As they are very important

I don't have a voltmeter. Shall I just try with standard bulbs?

Yes if you have normal operation. Then the H4 plug and voltage is Ok.

A half decent volt meter is worth its waight in gold.
A led test lamp are ok to a point but need a load in circuit

If it works well then I just need to buy one of those relays right?

You can get both bulbs (Hid) to work yes?
All box does is,
1, power up the ballasts. As your one has only the one box (no dip /main switching feed relay separate)
If the ballast Is Ok. The bulbs will light in one of the positions Dip or main.
2 the other parts move the bulb or mask on the hid bulb for main and dip.
The bi xenon I fitted to my Juke had a separate fused supply to power the ballast. Yours should have this as hids direct kits are better than the £1.kits you find on ebay.
If the fuse or the connections from the battery are no good they can power the ballast from the original H4 connector by back feeding from the sensor wire but only one (dip position or main) position will power the hid ballast /bulb

So you still need to check out this.
