This whole thing is a complete crock of ****.

I'm still not sure what the fuss is about. Unless of course somebody likes to ride/drive around with non of the above.

My bike is currently taxed until March, but Insurance runs out 21st December.
The bike is currently stored in my garage, covered under my home insurance for fire/theft only, provided it is in the garage.

Therefore, I will not be renewing my bike insurance until March time when I expect to be using the bike.

So in response to your reply Dizz, I disagree completely, there is no need for me to renew my insurance until March, the bike will not be leaving my garage. I can't be arsed to refund my tax for the little money it will get me, because I am a lazy *******. (which also happens to be my perrogative).

Sorry if this post sounds a bit agressive, annoyed with whoever thought of the idea, rather than the replies themself.

Everyones entitled to their opinion Dave, as such I have just learnt that bikes can get insured under the house insurance, although I'm not too sure how many you could get away with LOL.
Its fair to say you'd be ffffd off, as it could easily affect you, I only get my bikes insured all year round as they are on a multibike policy, and all get done on the same day.
Now, for example, I have Suzy that hasn't been near a road in a year, I'd be extremely peed off if, like you I was 'hit' under this legislation if she wasn't insured like she is.....as shes only being sat there whilst I was pregnant, and I reallllllly don't think she'd be out on the road in those circumstances

SO come to think about.....there is every reason to be a fusspot!

Funnily enough I have my bike insured while in the garage under the house policy, just added as an individual item to the policy.

Ehmmm----wonder what would happen if it was nicked
No need to claim on the bike insurance and keep my bonus
I might add it didn't cost anything to do this as the value is less than£3000,my watch is more than that and costs

Indeed a valid point. It never occurred to think about putting most of the stable on house insurance. I think it will definitely be one to look into at renewal time in May!

The most important aspect of this is the principle involved, i.e. you will be guilty of an offence for doing precisely nothing "wrong" other than not obeying some bureaucratic dictat.

Whether you chose to keep your vehicle insured all year or not, allow tax to run out then SORN, apply for refund of tax and declare SORN, well that's all entirely up to you. Providing you don't use the vehicle on the road uninsured you shouldn't be at risk of prosecution and vehicle confiscation.

The next step will be compulsory insurance for any registered vehicle whether it is roadworthy or not, you think I jest?

If you are putting motorbikes under home insurance policies - they normally stipulate some terms about keeping it safe (i.e off the road) and that you need to declare it and it's value.

I think mine cost me an extra £9 a year or something (on my mum's home insurance with umpteen years no claims)

Ok what about this for scenarios, actually mine earlier in the year.

I had a lambretta, classic scoot, free tax, but still have to apply every year.
Sold my lambretta, guy didnt pick it up for three weeks, lived in france,my insurance had been cancelled for another policy on the my DRZ which i bought through the sale of my scoot.
Scoot sat in my garage, taxed (albeit free) with no insurance on it, so, scenario 1, thoughts?

Second scenario, i bought my sprint in may, crappy offer on trade in, so bought the sprint then sold my sv privately 3 weeks later.
As soon as i bought my sprint i changed policy over, wasnt gonna do multi bike for 3 weeks or less, so sv sat in my garage taxed but not insured? would i be fined?
Its bolox, end of.
