From what I can make of it all, the reason it all went pear shaped was because the guy was overtaking without any forward planning whatsoever, with very poor overtake technique, with cars on-coming, at too high a speed! The speed limits are there for the reason that they give you the appropriate time (hopefully) to react - mind you judging by his ostensible gung-ho attitude even if he had been going at the speed limit I doubt he would have noticed the guy in the dark coloured car's intentions.

Very sorry for him and his family...but you reap what you sew

Blimey you would think some people are absolute ****ing saints after reading this thread

People percieve risk in different ways at the end of the day, I could easily go on all day about my views on it but cant be arsed with the arguing about it with the winged people that have glowing halo's around there head.

Nope, its not really aimed at anyone in particular just happened to come after your post.

The point is speeding is speeding, people are sat here trying to say 90mph is ok but anything more is excessive, these are the people that need to step down off their high horse. Speeding is speeding and unless you never break the speed limit you should sit down and shut the **** up. People will think 110mph is ok and not excessive, then theres the people that will think 150 is ok and not excessive.

Then theres the rules, unless you stick to them religously you have no right to sit and patronise everyone else on what is right and what is wrong.

I break rules, but I'm a firm believer of the theory.......'there is a time and a place'....if you pick the wrong one you pay the price

Yeah but there's a bit difference between that and doing 150+ on an empty motorway at 2am. I'm not saying I ride like a saint in the slightest.

I feel sorry for everyone involved, especially for the biker's family and the bloke driving the van

+1
Condolences to the guy's family - looks like he definitely picked the wrong time and wrong place to test his bike, shame about is he hasn't had a chance to learn from this mistake.

Better to overtake at 61mph and spend 10x the time in the danger area?

High speed filtering somewhere where there is nowhere for the overtaken cars to go (i.e no junctions or spaces for them to overtake). Not unreasonable, but 150mph closing speed (probably fairly average for this on NSL) means no second chances...

They're set arbitrarily for the lowest common denominator, after 12 pints.

Not relevant for overtaking where the difference in velocity is the one worth considering.

No Chris, it's not mate. A 10R is only as fast as you twist the throttle and my silly moment on a 10R would no faster than my silly moment on the SV, unless I wasn't in control of the bike and it's power had caught me out, which wouldn't happen if it was my bike and I was used to it. I got caught out by a Sprint ST recently and found myself 50 mph faster than I thought I was going. I didn't get caught out a second time and I certainly didn't take it out with a camera strapped to it with the intent of videoing as high a number on the speedo as possible.

The SV is perfectly capable of doing any speed that I am interested in doing, occassionally I'd like more power for overtakes or carrying a pillion, but I certainly don't want to go faster than the SV is capable of.

Who claimed to be a saint exactly? I'm not saint, I just claim to be more sensible than the idiot that got killed. Thats not difficult really is it.
