A good friend of mine was selling a can that he had on his SV650, said it sounded really good and increased perfomance (very slightly), said it was easy to fit etc etc so I took it off his hands, went ahead and fitted it with no problems at all, when I started the bike up I nearly fell over in shock at how loud it was (some might disagree but the louder the better for me).
I've spoken to a few people in 'the know' and im getting mixed replys about if its road legal or not, would it pass an MOT, do I keep it or put the original back (which I have kept). Advice please. Mick PS anyone in cannock or staffordshire on SV650.org ????????????? ![]() |

Is it 'E' marked?
Has it got 'NOT FOR ROAD/HIGHWAY USE' or 'RACE USE ONLY' stamped on it? Has it got the facillity for a removable baffle? I run mine without the baffle, It's LOUD. But I like it. PLUS people in cars can hear me coming which can only be a good thing. Personally, because of the low-down frequency of a V-twin, I think the noise they make is not really intrusive. Unlike a screaming 15000rpm IL4 engine. With regard to MOT, check all of the above, (E mark etc), If it has a removable baffle and is a road legal type, then when it comes to MOT time, stick the baffle in and you should be fine!! |

or use a decent tester who regards loud cans as an essential safety feature.
remember there is no noise test done for an MOT or e mark required

Although someone posted on here the other day about a 'tester' peeling some tape off of his exhaust to expose the "NOT FOR ROAD USE". That tester should be forced to go on a refresher course. Most Bike Testers I know, ride bikes anyway and are level headed about these sort of things!!! ![]() |

I have a very loud illegal can that had "not for road use" stamped on it. It failed its mot for this reason, but after some advise on here the same exhaust passed the retest and noise was not an issue for the tester. As long as the tester can't see any markings then it's at his discretion whether he passes it or not.

Not strictly true, the sound comes from the back of the bike and travels backwards...the bike travelling forwards towards a car with the windows shut and the radio on.. Sorry but loud cans dont save people, they sound nice ![]() |

![]() ![]() I also notice when I'm in the car that I hear loud exhausts coming up behind - but not quiet bikes ![]() |

Have you not thought that if your filtering through traffic then people sat there going nowhere will be more likely to see you in a wing mirror? And as a bike rider sat in a car, your more likely to be on the lookout for other bikes anyway. Did a search and found loads of other people discussing it too:- http://www.canadiandriver.com/forum/...;topic=62482.0 But as for the OP, if you fit a sports can, keep the standard one too as the plod can get funny about it. ![]() Also, people hear it when you're filtering because you're right next to 'em. Last edited by Speedy; 17-05-09 at 01:08 PM. Reason: Wanted to add something! |
