Default Roadside diagnostic and fix test

MODS, Do you think this should be in issues or tuning? Feel free to shift it to tuning if better suited.

OK ORGers quick test of diagnostic and repair logic. This is an opportunity for the regular "Have you tried XYZ..." posters to post suggestions and see who thinks logically based on knowledge and who blindly posts stuff previously posted.

Would be good if the hard-core tech guru's refrain from posting for a bit to see how the keen amateurs fare.

So... Sid Quid, Rictus, Yorkie Chris, Bibio and any other guru types please drop me a PM with your thoughts if you want to play.

The following is what really happened to me today not some made up nonsence.

The Scenario:-
The Bike:-
SV1000N K3

The Scenario:-
85 mile ride at mixed pace.
Refueled so should have >40 miles of fuel remaining.
Not raining, not been through any puddles.
Was sub-zero in the morning but a good 10-12 degrees by now
Had been blatting up the A3 for 10 mins or so but nice A road for last 10 mins since I waved goodbye to teh other 14 ORGers I was riding with.
Everything normal upto now
Had fitted hand-guards that morning which involves removing and refitting bar ends and fixing to lever pivots etc.

On the bike and about my person I have:-
Standard toolkit that lives in the little plastic box
A mobile phone but no coverage
Some cash
Some insulation tape
Some cableties
Some earplugs
The phone number of the waitress from the lunchtime pub
I recon I'm about 4/10 technical competency

The problem:-
I slow to negotiate a roundabout after a 30mph section and the bike stalls.
Restart it and it fires up, revs to about 5k then stalls without me touching throttle
Start again, same scenario
Start again and if I lift the revs to about 6k it'll run but sounds real lumpy
Pull into a carpark take off lid and kit, confirm still no mobile coverage
I'm about 6 miles from home with a massive hill between me and home so can't push it home.

The test:-
You know what I have with me, you know what happened, what do you do and in what order to get home.

If you want to "try anything" or "check anything" post your query and I'll try and provide a response to your diagnostic.

Go for it......

Myself, I'd ride the bugger home at under 5k revs, but that's just me.

Not possible. Press starter, gets to 5k on its own then dies. Lift throttle to >6k and it sort of runs but not in anyway you'd want to do more than a few hundred yards

Remove seats and all plastics, remove tank, remove throttle bodies, drop engine, strip it down find the smallest speck of dirt in the sump. clean it out with a small bit of dishcloth you have under your seat, put everyting back together with some cable ties you nicked off nathans bike when he wasn't looking and ride it home as everything is fine. any points??

either that you you opened your fuel cap, relieved some pressure from the tank and lines and it was fine?

Go and buy a multimeter, drain oil refill with Unicorn blood or £500 pound a bottle superlube, find a phonebox reverse charges to the RAC, get them to pick you up and drop you off at the most expensive garage known to man, and have the entire bike rebuilt from shiny cheap Chinese after market parts!

Thunderace, please consider yourself added to the "please refrain from posting" list. Feel free to drop a PM if you want a sensible guess.

I would wave down a passing car full of hot girls on their way back from the beach. I'd ask them for a lift and completely forget about the bike.

Drain the diesel out and put petrol in

Oh and take the hand guards off and find the fault you put on in the morning

I considered that too, but the level of stupidity required would be too monumental for that to be true.

Revs tend to rise when engine start to run lean. So it would indicate fuel issue rather than air issue. Fuel line trapped or ..... diesel in fuel tank!
