Default Dragging clutch problem.

Hi Guys
Anyone know how the clutch gets it's oil supply? It it fed or does it simply sit in oil?

I have tried everything to stop mine dragging:-
- Adjusted according to Haynes manual several times
- Replaced friction plates
- Replaced steel plates
- Replaced oil filter and oil with Rock Oil Semi 10w 40

The clutch seems to be okay when cold and starts to drag when hot.

I am now wondering if I have blocked an oil passage (if there is such a thing) that supply's the clutch as I have used that nasty gasket paste a while ago.

It's driving me crazy any help would be great.
Oh and mileage is about 55k now

What is the oil level at? If you have too much oil in the engine, it will cause the clutch to drag. I run mine just over half way up the glass window.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried all levels. I ride just over 500 miles a week and top oil up to the top once it gets to the bottom. Doesn't seem to effect the clutch drag much but will keep an eye on it.

Had something similar a few years ago and it was much improved by getting a new worm drive actuator thing. The bit that you adjust with a screwdriver by the front sprocket.Mine seemed fine, but was quite worn due to getting grit and carp in it.

running mine at full had the affect you're describing-fine when cold, sluggish when hot and impossible when hot and stationary.
try running it at half way and keep a good eye on the level. hopefully this will help

Lol carp in it would cause problems! I think that is going to be the next part I change. If it was the worm though I would expect it to be difficult to shift when cold aswell. It may still be down to the worm not providing enough movement so I will look at changing it. When I watch the pushrod move it seems to move a fair amount when i pull the clutch lever.

Lifter most likely/easiest to fix, check it carefully for wear and lost motion, failing that it may well be a notched clutch basket

Cold, thin plates sit in notches on basket = works fine. When the plates get hot they expand but can't split neatly as they hang in the notches even under no spring pressure = draggy clutch when hot.

Thanks Sid. I have wondered what a notched basket is and that makes sense. I will replace lifter first and then inspect the basket. I guess these notches could be hard to spot?
