I've got a Spyball alarm which on the whole I am very happy with. It does exactly what it say on the box. However, I have a little problem. Well not so much a problem, but a little annoyance.
There is a little blinky LED that errr...blinks to let you know the alarm is working. Well it has stopped blinking. Upon closer inspection there are two wires which go to the LED which have fallen off. Upon closer, closer inspection, this is because they have totally corroded and are a green powdery mess. The alarm works perfectly apart from this. I don't know where I am going with this..... Is there anyone close to me who could help me sort this? I am totally rubbish at anything electrical. The LED had a little resistor soldered to it as well. What's this for. Is it like LED indicators to slow the blink rate? Should I just take it back to the installers and get them to sort it? Blithering ramble over. |

The resistor is to limit the current to the LED, there is probably a 12v supply and LED's usually need no more than 2.2V
I don't know anything about spyball alarms, but I know electronics and soldering. Is the LED on the end of a lead? Does the lead come out of the alarm and the LED has snapped off from this, or is it mounted into the alarm, or what? If its corroded its will need replacing ( cheapo ), and you could change the colour if you wanted - fancy green or blue instead? |

Halfords sell flashing LEDS (yes, I know so does everywhere else, but Halfords are usualyl easy to get to and deal with) and you probably just need to wire it in. If you know anyone who can solder, though, it's worth speaking to them- if the originals corroded, any bodged wiring will go the same way and fast.

It might be worth putting some heat shrink material over the legs of the LED to prevent them corroding off again ( very cheap and easy to do )
