I have a large 20 gallon drum that I put used oil into. Every year I take it to my local tip and pour it into their waste oil tank

Drop the oil out of the bike into an old ice cream tub. Then change the oil and keep the left over new oil in a smaller sealed container. Then tip the old oil into the oil 'can' and take to dump.

If you want to spend some money get a specific oil drain can to catch the old oil, this can then be easilt taken to the dump for recycling.

Oil catch tray is about £8 mine holds 10 litres easy to use, no mess when I get chance down to the dump to empy it so it can be recycled. Job done.

Use it for lubing the chain.
The rest goes in my mates old banger which conveniently burns it every time he boots the throttle.

Why did no-one else say this?

My old engine oil goes in a container, then ends up in the scottoiler. If I end up with an excessive amount of spare oil, it's usually changed ahead of service schedule & kept for a while in case it needs to go in another engine as an emergency. Other than that it'll go to the tip.
