I'm cheap and don't want to spend tons of money on a new shock. A lot of the guys in the US run a used 636 shock. I'm a fat old fart so I'm running a ZX14 shock on my SV. It's adjustable, a really good swap (length and stroke) and it comes stock with an adequate spring for a fat old man. Almost everyone here at least starts out with a better shock (used) off another bike before going to a top of the line aftermarket shock. I'm just curious what you fellows over here are running.

I didn't race but I got a nice WP shock for my SV. I got it 2nd hand from someone on here and it transformed the bike. It was adjustable for length so I ran it slightly (15mm) longer than the standard, it made the back end way more planted and the turn in was a lot quicker.
I put WP springs in the front changing the oil and by the end had them dropped through the forks by 10 mm. For me it improved the bike.

I've had the idea about putting either Hagon, Ohlins or Hyperpro fork springs.
Now I don't know if it will make that much off a difference to the front end? Also debating wether to change the rear shock or not. |

There are lots of people that never ride their SV hard enough to notice the suspension's failings. Unfortunately the suspension is the biggest place that Suzuki saved money. If you race or even ride aggressively on the road, at some point you will decide that you want to upgrade the suspension. You need to upgrade the shock and forks at the same time. If you upgrade just the forks, it will make the shock act worse. Same with the shock. A better shock will show just how poor the forks are.
If you're road riding or your rules allow it, a used Gixxer USD front end is your best bet. My rules require me to race the original fork lowers, so it gets better springs, emulators and oil. After this expense, I couldn't afford an aftermarket shock, so I have a used ZX14 shock which is a big improvement until I have scratched up the money for a new or used aftermarket shock. |
