Default Dan's crazy bike buying thread.

Okay, I have a dilemma. I've got a Hornet but I've also ordered a Triumph Street Triple. I could afford to keep both but would leave me a little skint. Plus I don't to have the Triumph a my only bike and ride it through next winter as it reallt does wear a bike down. So, would it be better to get rid of the Hornet and get something like a GS500? There are lots about even wth low mileage and I'm sure they will be cheaper to run, insure and service. This would give me extra dough to get the Triumph still and have best of both worlds.

What do people think?

But why sell the hornet, when in your own words its the only bike that has managed to hold your interest?

I would definitely keep the hornet until you have had the triple for a few months, as knowing you it will be sold by then. That will give you something to ride.

I think your problem is that in a relatively short biking career, you have splurged and bought pretty much every type of bike going. Thats left you with nothing to dream of.

Get a R1 and be done with it.

Dan, you're far too young and attractive to ride an R1.

Come on Dan. We've all had the hilarious cheap GS500 loan bike. Horrible horrible things. Run the Hornet forever.

Speak to 21Quest about a scooter if you're serious about saving money on your commute. Otherwise if you think there's more to life than money, and at least want to make sure you enjoy the ride you do every day, save you're pennies elswhere. Like at AMS, for an extra ?60 you could have learned to service the bike yourself.

I do almost all the servicing myself. The only thing I don't touch are the brakes and the valve clearances but they are not done all that much. My idea of a commuter would be to lessen the cost of the bike that I do the majority of riding on (i.e. to work). While the Hornet makes a great commuter it still has a big 180 rear tyre which for a pair is about ?200. Also fuel is not that cheap anymore and the Hornet takes about ?15 to fill nowadays and that only gets me 120 or so miles (2 days to work and back). If I had a commuter like the GS500 servicing would be much cheaper, tyres would be about ?75 - ?100 cheaper for a set and also things like insurance is about ?150 cheaper. It doesn't need to be fun, it's only for commuting. I'd have the Triple for weeknd and fun. I thought it was a pretty sensible idea (for me) and could potentially save me a fair amount of money in a year.
