Default Possible Engine Problems

Hi everyone, hope you can shed some light on this?

I was racing up at Cadwell last weekend. The bike ran perfectly through all of the Friday test day, Sadurday's Qualifying and 2 races (4th/3rd) and the first race on the sunday (5th).

I came to the last race and made a blinding start. I was up to second in the rookies and 8th overall. Lap 3 of 9 came round and I suddenly noticed that the red warning light was on and FI was displaying on the dash.

I wasnt going to retire from the race as the bike felt fine and I was in such a good position. So I just backed off a tad and brought it home. Eventually finished in 3rd which was good. As I tootled back to the paddock I pulled the clutch in and noticed that the bike was idling at 4000rpm!!! I got back, stuck the bike up on the stands and turned it off. Let it cool and went back to it about half an hour later.

Sure enough I turned the ignition on and it started up fine, Idled at 2000rpm as I had set it and no warning lights. Hmmm? Confused!

I let the bike cool down once again and gave it all a check over. I left it another half an hour while I was packing up and noticed that there was no oil in the sight glass! S**t!!!

I'd had enough by this point and drove home. I have only just got around to servicing the bike due to work commitments today. The bike has been sat for a week and still no oil in the sight glass. I drained it out and there was only 1.4L!! Probably 1.5L if I took the filter off, which I will be doing later. There are no metal shards on the Sump Plug either.

I'm stumped? Are these two connected?? My mrs was watching from the mountain and I have checked a few racing line photographs and both confirm a lack of blue smoke. There is also no visible sign of oil leakage around the engine or in the bellypan.

Really could do with a few words of wisdom, any ideas???

Cheers guys.

bypass two wires under seat and check if you have code stored.

I have heard about retrieving the fault code but have no idea where to start.

I changed the oil and filter before Cadwell. So its very recently done. Yeah my next step is to have a peak in teh airbox. I need to anyway to see if there is anything obvious relating to the FI fault.

there is connector under seat where you plug switch tool to check code(see manual).you don't need tool, just bypass black/white and white/red wires, turn bike on and you will see C-?? code on gauge.

The connector is a small white one (IIRC) with a rubber boot over it. Open the boot, and there's 6 connections inside it, only 5 of these have wires connected. These are arranged in 2 rows of 3. You want to connect the middle row together IIRC (but double check this before you do it).

This then puts the bike into "dealer service mode" and will tell you relevant error codes. IIRC, the error code display is in the place of the engine temperature.

Dealer service mode only remembers events from the last time the ignition was turned on, so I doubt that anything will show. Useful for future though.

In your case, you may want to wire in a switch on the dash so you can just flick it mid-race to see what the code is. There's a large range of codes that will light up the FI warning, from incorrect spark timing through to injector failure (but you'd of noticed that one).
