Default Ideas for reasonable distance commuter bike

I'm looking for a placement for my apprenticeship at the minute and a few days ago I was told that there was one possibly but its not exactly close and not something I could do on my bike every day comfortably so I'm thinking of purchasing an old ST1100 as I don't have my cage test passed yet either. Good idea? or is there something that would be as good with decent weather protection, decent sized panniers shaft driven etc?

Honda Deauville ( sp ) would fit your bill perfectly I would have thought.

A few peeps on here have them, probably not the most inspiring bike, but you should be able to find one cheap enough.

( I've given your thread a more descriptive title and moved it to bike talk as its more relevant in that section and you'll get more sensible answers than you will in IB )

I have a 250 bandit its no where near economical enough, its sitting at 10,000 revs in 6th to get around 60mph. I'll be looking at 120+ miles per day on boring A roads in all weathers as well as some motorway occasionally. But I'm gonna need to carry safety boots and safety clothing as well as have some where to put my helmet and leathers.
