Default Advice on nipped wires on Speedo cable

Hi Fellow SVers

After some advice please for sorting some wiring ...

Noticed speedometer wasnt working other day and then it sprang back to life on journey. Think I must have nipped it when I have fitted my tank bag
back on when replacing my plugs ... I think I have pulled it against part of the chassis when routing the tank bag strapping underneath and round. Anyway, as a result I have kind of crimped it, and I have obviously damaged the wiring at this point. It was working fine this morning on the way to work, so it's kind of possibly evened itself out in order for it to work, but there is obvious damage inside.

Any electrical wizards know the best way for me to resolve it, i.e. strip and reconnect so it is robust.

Thanks

Tony (Lancashire)

Given that it's an electrical connection (not like older cars which have a physically spinning cable)...

The easiest solution would be to cut the wires properly (cleanly), strip the outer back a little, then solder it back together (possibly using a little strip of wire to bridge the gap).

Now the tricky bit (I'd definately do if you crimped it near a common rub point, or anywhere that's exposed to the elements on the bike)...

Heatshrink all the internal wires seperately, then heatshrink the whole job lot.

If you don't have a power supply you can run that far, gas soldering iron would be handy. Also a blow torch on low setting used carefully might be needed.

Let me know if I've been too vague

Did this with my on one for my SV's though not as well as Baph mentioned, but as I have the bike stripped down I'm planing on doing it again. But it worked all just fine.

As described above and expertly done on my bike by 21Quest. Just remember to feed the heatshrink tube on each wire, and one on all wires before you solder. It's way more difficult after you solder, unless you have David Copperfield to assist.

Depends on the heatshrink you use for that.

If I add it on after soldering I use the stuff that has adhesive on the inside. The adhesive activates with heat. Overlap the heatshrink on itself & it seals up nicely.

I usually burn myself doing that though

Cheers for the advice fellas (Baph, esp)

I used to solder serial cables when I used to look after a computer installation, as well as write their software, brew the tea etc. I once remember a field engineer who came to fix a printer used to regularly refer to my soldering, as "like bird-****", and I couldn't disagree.

That being the case, although I am sure I could solve it using the soldering method, are there any natty ways using connectors that you are aware of? A guy at work tells me there are some plastic components (without screws) that slot together?

Cheers again

Tony

If you really have an aversion to soldering, maybe insulated connectors might be worth looking at. Something like insulated bullet connectors.

Cheap as chips, but will look damned ugly & come sale time, it'll look like it was a bodged job (IMO).

Cheers Baph.

Think I will pursue this as an option. Shouldnt make a difference on resale, as it is in a visually discreet area, plus, I have had my bike since October 2003 and cannot see me getting rid, would rather keep as a commuter than have to sell at some crappy resale price.

Thanks again.
